Contrary to popular belief, it IS possible to promote forest regeneration and minimize destructive deer browse!
This workshop will be led by experts from UWSP's College of Natural Resources and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Attendees will dive into the habitat requirements of white-tailed deer and how to incorporate their needs into forest management plans.Through presentations and field tours, we will cover:
- Basic deer ecology, including habitat requirements and how those requirements vary seasonally.
- How to use silvicultural treatments to increase forage production and where/when they are appropriate.
- How to use these techniques to avoid the negative impacts of deer browse.
- Where and how to incorporate cover to meet the year-round needs of deer.

| PRESCRIBED FIRE WEBINAR SERIES | | State-driven Burn Boss Certification | | |
A free webinar series on Prescribed Fire for Forest Management continues on October 1 at 10:30 a.m. CT.
The Wisconsin Prescribed Fire Council (WPFC), in collaboration with UWSP's College of Natural Resources and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, recently developed Wisconsin's first ever Certified Burn Boss Program. Their inaugural Prescribed Burn Boss Academy, located at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Treehaven facility, convened 28 new burn bosses from across the state. This feat, five years in evolution, focused upon fire prescription at the burn boss level instead of fire suppression. This webinar is intended for both a Wisconsin and a national audience and will discuss the process of developing a Burn Boss Certification program for states like Wisconsin and potential paths forward for other state that do not yet have a similar program.
In this series, we hear from national experts as we discuss forest management using prescribed fire. Learn some of the practical knowledge of where, when, why, and how to apply fire in forest ecosystems. Recordings of previous webinars in this series are available on our website.
WHEN: October 1 from 10:30 a.m.-Noon CT

You likely know Woodsy, the famous owl who has encouraged forest visitors to “give a hoot” for over five decades. But have you heard of Myrtle, the Green Circle Turtle? Both are ambassadors of outdoor ethics in forests, parks, and protected areas. Encouraging responsible visitor behavior is a key component of effective outdoor recreation management.
Join Laura Anderson McIntyre, Professor of Forest Recreation, in exploring the role of outdoor ethics in protecting forest lands, supporting positive visitor experiences, and promoting the many benefits of outdoor recreation.

In this workshop led by experts from the American Bird Conservancy and UWSP's College of Natural Resources we will focus on the biology, habitat requirements, and tools to implement forest management that enhances habitat for neotropical migratory birds. By focusing on a handful of important species, we’ll walk through their identification, habitat needs, and ideal silvicultural prescriptions. Through a combination of presentations, case studies, and field tours, we will cover: basic biology of neotropical birds; forest habitat considerations; early- and mid-successional forest habitat management; and adapting silvicultural prescriptions to benefit specific bird species.

| | | SILVICAST PODCAST: RIVER TREES | | This month's episode of SilviCast sponsored by: | | URBAN WOOD: MAXIMIZING THE FUTURE WORTH OF URBAN AND COMMUNITY TREES | | |
| |
Along with providing beauty and environmental benefits for the more than 80% of Americans who live in urban areas, urban and community forests provide a habitat for wildlife and, arguably, even greater ecological benefits as trees reach end of life. When trees in the urban forest are removed for reasons other than harvest, their “urban wood” can be captured and incorporated back into the built environment, completing this virtuous circle.
Join Dwayne Sperber of Wudward Urban Forest Products and learn how the growing urban wood industry is creating and expanding opportunities for urban and community trees to achieve their highest and best use through urban wood products.
