Reminder: Directive 040 pressure and Packer Isolation Test requirements

Directive 040 Section 2.2.3 requires that annual pressure and testing surveys be completed by December 31, 2025 and submitted by March 31, 2026. 

Failure to obtain and submit the required pressures and, in some instances, fluid analysis, will result in a $1000 administrative penalty (fine) plus you will still have to obtain and submit the test data to fulfil the 2025 requirement. Contact us if you require assistance requesting a waiver.

Directive 087: Well Integrity Management Section 2 Table 1 requires that packer isolation tests (PIT) results must be conducted and reported on qualifying wells by the end of December 31, 2025. Results of PITs must be submitted on the AER’s Form F022: Packer Test Record.

AB: Invitation for Feedback on Revisions to Directive 058

The AER is seeking feedback on updates to Directive 058: Oilfield Waste Management Requirements for the Upstream Petroleum Industry. This directive sets out requirements for handling, treating, reusing, and disposing of oilfield waste produced by the upstream petroleum, geothermal, and brine-hosted mineral resource development industries.


The AER is also seeking feedback on their proposed 
Manual XXX: Oilfield Waste Management. The manual complements Directive 058 and provides guidance on managing oilfield waste and schedules with detailed application requirements for oilfield waste management facilities, oilfield waste management components, and one-time waste management activities.


To provide feedback on the proposed revisions to Directive 058 and the new manual, complete the public comment form on the AER website. Feedback will be accepted through November 2, 2025.

AB: Updates to the Public Lands Administration Regulation

Alberta Forestry and Parks has revised Public Lands Administration Regulation (PLAR) Table A2: Alberta Energy Regulator. Changes were made to the survey plan requirements, and disposition purpose and activity types for mandate expansion activities were added.

AB: Invitation for Feedback Revisions to Closure Nomination Requirements in Directive 088

The AER is seeking feedback on proposed changes to Directive 088: Licensee Life-Cycle Management to support the ongoing implementation and operationalization of closure nomination. Changes include clarifying closure timelines, reporting requirements, and licensee expectations.


To provide feedback on the proposed revisions to Directive 088, complete the public comment form on the AER website. Feedback will be accepted through November 12, 2025.

SK: Update to Licence transfer schedules

On October 7, 2025, the ER announced that the Licence Transfer application schedules have been updated to include a new guidance tab within the spreadsheets. Please use the latest version and refer to the guidance tabs for help completing your submissions.

On October 2, 2025, the ER posted a guide on how to apply for the “Removal of Well Control” authorized under Guideline PNG040: Application for Removing Equipment Essential to the Proper Control of a Well.

BC: Charlie Lake Core Lab Reopening

Access to the Charlie Lake Facility near Fort St. John has been restricted since November 2023. The Charlie Lake Core Facility reopened on August 11, 2025, restoring public access to the BCER's full inventory of core samples.
