VOTFNJ Family News
Journeying together as family through sadness and joy...

Editor's Note: This edition of the newsletter is abbreviated from past versions because of unforeseen circumstances. As we look to the future and reimagine "The Voice," know that we will always be in touch with you, providing timely information about our liturgies, our programs, and our community–as well as the wider church and world we inhabit. We send Mary Aktay, who has been our Voice for 10 years, our deepest thanks for her outstanding work and our prayers for her health.

Praying Together...

three_candles_orchids.jpg

We pray that Bob Pipchick can find relief from persistent pain. We pray for Mary Aktay as she undergoes surgery for a malignant tumor.

We continue to pray for the physical and emotional health of Mike and Teri Corso's son, Michael, and rejoice that he was pronounced free of cancer.

We continue to hold Mary Gannon's daughter, Emilie Jane Gannon, in our hearts.

We continue to pray for Dick Rento and Louise Mancinelli, who are in Memory Care.

We pray for the volunteers of RAMP, members of the Sophia Inclusive Community, Pathways to Prosperity, and the Christian Community in Convent Station, and all of their families.

We pray for all the victims of gun violence in our country and that legislation will be enacted to regulate firearms.

Celebrating Together...

Congratulations to Bob Hoatson on the publication of his book.

West Orange Resident & Former Priest Publishes Book About Childhood Clergy Sexual Abuse

"The Sacrifices of the Masses is a riveting description of one man’s painful journey of recovery from sexual abuse by clergy and religious. More than that, it is the story of a victim turned survivor, whistleblower, advocate, and healer of souls. Sexual abuse by clergy imposes a life sentence. It is the murder of innocent souls; there are no quick fixes or cures, but there is a road to recovery that former priest and author, Dr. Robert Hoatson, has paved for numerous victims. Over the course of more than twenty-five years, through ‘Road to Recovery, Inc., ’ Bob Hoatson, founder, has touched the lives of over 5,000 victims and their families..."

Sharing Together...

Bernice Anglin recommends Richard Rohr's The Tears of Things.

How do we live compassionately in a time of violence and despair? What can we do with our private disappointments and the anger we feel in such an unjust world? In his most personal book yet, Richard Rohr turns to the writings of the Jewish prophets, revealing how some of the lesser-read books of the Bible offer us a crucial path forward today.

Mary Aktay recommends "The Physics of Prayer: What Quantum Mechanics Suggests About the Power of Intention" by Thom Hartmann.

[I]n recent decades, a strange convergence has begun to unfold—between mysticism and modern physics, prayer and quantum probability. It turns out that the very foundations of physical reality may be more open to influence than we once thought.

VOTFNJ RESOURCE

The VOTFNJ Coordinating Team has compiled a resource list on the subject of systemic racism, offering theological readings as well as historical and political perspectives. Download it here.

VOTFNJ is a founding member and supporter of Refugee Assistance Morris Partners. RAMP is proud of its work sponsoring refugee families since its founding in 2016 thanks to the ongoing support of its deeply dedicated volunteers, faith-based organizations, and generous donors. RAMP partners with the International Rescue Committee (IRC).

RAMP helps people bridge to a new life for a better future. RAMP assists vetted and documented refugee families and individuals who fled their homes under the threat of war or violence. Since its founding in 2016, RAMP has supported 22 adults and 21 children from Syria, Afghanistan, and El Salvador. Thirteen are now U.S. citizens, and two are serving in the military.

RAMP earned status as an independent New Jersey 501 (c)(3) non-profit in 2022.

RAMP funding is private, and so organizations like ours are now a primary resource for the families who have arrived in the U.S. in recent months. Federal funding for all the Resettlement Agencies, like the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Church World Service (CWS), has stopped, forcing them to cut staff by as much as two-thirds, and severely limit the services they are able to provide.
