The Adult Advanced French class meets in person on Tuesday evenings for four weeks, beginning September 8, 2026 CHEZ JACQUELINE MUNK in Milford.
Classes are small, friendly, and welcoming, creating an ideal setting for conversation. Classes meet Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for four weeks, starting September 9. A short break gives you time to stretch, have a snack, and connect with fellow students. Enrollment is limited to ensure the best experience for everyone.
This course focuses primarily on conversation, helping you express yourself with ease on
a variety of current topics while strengthening grammatical accuracy. You will practice
all four language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—and homework may
be assigned.
Cost $160 plus membership enrollment if you are not already a member.

Do you find that you understand quite a bit of French when you read it — or even when you hear it — but when it’s time to speak, you suddenly feel tongue-tied?
In this six-week course, we'll focus on overcoming the fear and hesitation that can hold us back from speaking freely. Together, we’ll practice speaking out loud without second-guessing ourselves. We’ll work with words, fine-tune our pronunciation, while we are working with stories and easy articles from various media. This will help us build sentences with confidence. Along the way, grammar and new vocabulary will seamlessly be woven into our practices.
We'll create a fun, friendly, and nonjudgmental environment where everyone supports one another. Apologizing for mistakes will not be allowed.

Join the AFNH for an enriching day exploring a French Highlights Tour. The museum visit will start at 11:15 AM. After the guided visit, there will be plenty of time to explore the museum on your own or visit the recently opened exhibit: A King's Carpet Louis XIV and the Savonnerie. In 1668, King Louis XIV of France commissioned the Paris-based Savonnerie manufactory to create the largest carpet ever woven. Composed of 92 individual pieces, the carpet was intended to cover the full span of the Grande Galerie of the Louvre, measuring 440 meters, six times the length of the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. We will then meet at 2:30 PM at Café d'Alsace for lunch/ dinner.

Silken Sisters in Commerce: How Lyon and Paris Were Woven Together by the Silk Trade

The French silk trade was established in Lyon during the Renaissance, but the prime market for the luxurious silk fabrics and elaborate designs of Lyon was 250 miles to the northwest, in Paris.
In the Ancien Régime, Lyon silk had three theaters. Lyon was the industry, with master-weavers, workers, negotiants. The court of Versailles was the runway where new designs premiered for the nobility. And Paris was the retail market and ultimate fashion showcase for the wealthy bourgeoisie.
After the Revolution, the head-turning fashions made from the “fabriques de soie” (silk workshops) of Lyon continued to decorate the boulevards and salons of Paris.
Fortunes were made in Lyon silk, and Paris played a key economic role in it. The rising bourgeoisie and famed shops of Paris expanded the market for luxury goods. And the French government, centralized in Paris, dictated production rules and quality standards for Lyon silk, while tapping revenues from the industry.
