TRAC TALK

RE-USABLE MUGS and CUPS AT SWEET WILLIAMS and PROVISIONS

Coffee shops are warm welcoming places, and their patrons seem appreciative and accustomed to the happy buzz of people talking and sipping coffee, tea, or other hot and cold drinks.

But did you know that in the United States, about 16 billion paper coffee cups per year are thrown away.

You can make a difference by learning a little bit more about your favorite coffee shops. Yes, there is lots of waste at coffee shops; there is, however, an easy solution to the coffee shop waste scenario: Bring your own ceramic mug or travel mug. Consider bringing a larger cup for your iced drinks! You might just inspire others to do the same!

WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER BRINGING YOUR OWN MUG

OR ASKING IF THERE ARE CERAMIC MUGS

AVAILABLE FOR YOUR COFFEE OR TEA

1) Paper coffee cups are disposed of after one use: they are not recyclable due to a polyethylene lining (a plastic laminate) which prevents leaking. They are collected as trash and sent to landfills or Waste to Energy Plants. Granted, some people prefer a paper cup, but a ceramic or travel mug is much better both economically and environmentally.

2) Coffee cups labeled biodegradable or compostable also have a thin lining as do compostable take-out paper boxes. There are a few commercial composting facilities that accept compostable service-ware, though if there is no collection bin, and if there is no hauling, the compostable cups go straight into the garbage. If landfilled, the cups do not decompose as that process requires aeration and turning.

3) If you do purchase a plastic cup for iced drinks at a coffee shop, throw away the straw – it is not recyclable. Better yet, say up front that you don’t need a straw.

TRANSFER STATION STICKERS

New stickers will be available; purchased at Town Hall or by mail. Stickers should be affixed to your vehicle’s windshield.

Every resident in the towns of Salisbury and Sharon must pay a User Fee (aka Sticker Fee). Even if you use a hauler (ex. Richard Ralph or Welsh Sanitation) to transport your material to the facility, their arrangement with you does not include the User Fee Sticker cost. This fee must be paid whether you use the station during the year or not. Once paid, you will receive a sticker that will allow you access to the station throughout the year, should you decide to go with your own vehicle.

2.   Forms will be available at Town Hall and online at: https://www.salisburysharontransferstation.com

3.  You must pay for the sticker(s) at Town Hall by Cash/Check/credit card (There is a processing fee for credit cards).

Save the Date

This year celebrates the 14th Annual Quilt Exhibit at the Salisbury

Congregational Church. Each year’s exhibit has been a huge success and

wonderful to behold, with quilts of all sizes and designs, draped over the pews throughout the church. All quilts are welcome in the exhibit – whether made by you, given to you by your favorite aunt, purchased – or received -- as an anniversary or wedding gift and that special “who-knows-where-it-came-from?” group. Please bring your quilt(s) to the church and drape over a pew from October 5 - 7 between 10 and 2 (although some rearranging may be necessary). Cards will be available for you to provide your name and contact information as well as anything that you know about your quilt’s “story” – for example, its design, its quilter, and how it was acquired. (Don’t worry if you don’t have any of this information; we want to see your quilting treasures anyway!) For questions or further information, please contact Theresa Carroll at 860-671-9672.

2026 ANNUAL HOUSATONIC HERITAGE AREA WALKS ANNOUNCED

5 Autumn Weekends of Free, Guided Regional Interpretive Tours

The Upper Housatonic Valley National Heritage Area announces the 24th annual autumn Housatonic Heritage Walks in September.  A variety of 68 free, guided interpretive tours will be offered this autumn throughout The Berkshires, MA, and Litchfield County, CT (northwestern CT).

The public is invited to participate in these family-oriented, interpretive walks, offered in partnership with our region’s historic, cultural, and outdoor recreation organizations and the National Park Service. The Heritage Walks are the ideal opportunity to experience and learn about our region’s rich and varied local history.

Historians, naturalists, and environmentalists will lead participants on explorations through historic estate gardens and town districts, behind-the-scenes cultural site tours, nature walks, trail hikes, and tours of many of the industrial-site ruins that were once thriving local industries. There will be Native-American and African American history walks and an African-American history bike tour.

Detailed Heritage Walks brochures are available at libraries, post offices, and newspaper racks in major grocery stores in the region. The Walks schedule is also available at:  https://housatonicheritage.org/events/heritage-walks/
