Families Gather . . . Even On Wednesday

Each Sunday we gather as a church family. God commanded it for our good and His glory (Hebrews 10:24). We are blessed to gather with brothers and sisters in Christ to worship our great God. When our hearts are right, it’s a joyful, meaningful, and eternal experience.

In some ways, our Sunday gatherings are more obligatory. We’ve been commanded to regularly meet together on the Lord’s Day. It’s not sinful to miss a Sunday for a good reason; it would be sinful, though, to miss for laziness, lack of priority, or neglect.

However, what about Wednesday nights? Not every church has Wednesday night activities, but Lawndale does. We meet to enjoy being a family and to equip the saints for the work of the ministry. We do what families do: eat, pray, fellowship around God’s Word, and care for one another. It’s less of an obligation and more of an opportunity.

This fall we are preparing for a great season of biblical,intergenerational ministry together (* denotes Sept. 9 start date):

• 5-6 pm * Dinner (by registration)
• 6-7:30 pm * Fusion (Students Gr 6-12 and Families)
• 6:15-7:30 pm Bible Studies

* Olympians and Gopher Buddies (Children and Preschoolers)

• 6:30-7:30 pm Choir Rehearsal

The main Bible study will be in the Christian Life Center and led by our Pastors. We will overview a significant and often labeled difficult section of Scripture called the Minor Prophets: “The Minor Prophets Are Not Minor.” God inspired 12 books we have put in this category of the Old Testament. We will overview 11 of them (since we covered Malachi at the end of last year as a church family):

• Sept. 9-Hosea, Sept. 16-Joel, Sept. 23-Amos, Sept. 30-Obadiah
• Oct. 7-Jonah, Oct. 14-Micah, Oct. 21-Nahum, Oct. 28-Habakkuk
• Nov. 4-Zephaniah, Nov. 11-Haggai, Nov. 18-Zechariah

You’ll be better prepared for next year’s church-wide Bible reading plan of the OT. You will also see how God made Himself known through the prophets and how their messages fit into the overall story of redemption. Michael Barrett in his Old Testament Introduction writes, “Prophets were one of three messianic (or anointed) offices in the Old Testament, along with priests and kings . . . the prophet was God’s representative to the people, whereas the priest served as man’s representative to God” (427).

Barrett goes on to say, “As God’s representative, the prophet functioned as God’s mouthpiece and had authority as he spoke only what God had revealed to him” (427). As we read and study them, we get to listen in to what God said to the people before He sent His only Son. We learn much about God and much about how He relates to people. And we have the privilege of doing this together as a family!

As we begin another ministry season, we are grateful for how God continues to work through our Next Gen Ministries. Over the last several months, we have seen children, students, parents, and volunteers progressing in the faith, and participating in Leadership Development and Intergenerational Ministry, some of our core values.

We are also entering this season with some staffing transitions and ministry adjustments that position us well for the future. While change can bring challenges, it also creates opportunities for fresh ideas, new leaders, and expanded ministry impact. We are excited about what God has ahead and look forward to partnering with families as we continue helping the next generation progress in knowing and proclaiming Jesus Christ.

Thank you for your prayers, encouragement, and faithful support of our children, students, volunteers, and ministry leaders.

Children's and Family Ministry (Babies-Grade 5)

A fun and safe place where kids can progress in knowing and proclaiming Jesus. 

Celebrating Wins:

• "The students faces lit up during the lesson on the Passover as they understood how the Destroyer passed over the Israelite's dwellings where the lamb's blood was applied. This led to a great teachable moment about how Jesus' sacrifice saves us from God's judgment against sin." - Scott Turner 
• A few students are preparing for baptism this October.
• Classroom Painting Project - COMPLETE! After serving us well for over 15 years, we celebrate God's provision to update classrooms with fun and freshly painted walls with which to start the new educational year.

Scripture Singers—All kids in grades K-5 are welcome to participate in this kids' choir where we learn scripture through song and perform quarterly during worship service. We will be in room 137 on September 6. If we have enough participation, we will sing on our 70th anniversary on September 13. 

Olympians and Gopher Buddies—start on September 9 (Wednesday evenings) for the new school year. Please register in advance through the open registration on the Church Center App. There will be a coach's meeting on September 2. Contact the Kids’ team to learn how you can make an eternal impact in the lives of kids and families.

Serve in Ministry—The impact of Kids’ Ministry is only possible because of faithful volunteers who give their time and talents to serve the next generation. As we prepare for a new ministry year, there are opportunities to serve in Games and recreation, hospitality, verse checks, large group Bible teaching, Special Needs, social media, and more!

September is here, and we are all now well into back-to-school season. We are settling in with our children and student areas with some refreshed classrooms, new faces and new places. Although there may be changes here and there, the overall goal remains the same. We are here to equip families to be the primary disciple-makers in the home. Pray for us as we pray for you to impact this next generation to the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

A word of encouragement:

“He cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7

Peter in his first epistle encourages us to not be surprised when fiery trials come our way as though it is something strange happening to us. He reminds us that they come our way to test us. (4:12) He goes on to say that if we are insulted for the name of Christ we are blessed because the Spirit of glory and of God rest upon us. (4:14) After a warning or two, he challenges us who suffer according to God's will to “entrust our souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.” (4:19) He goes on to remind us in chapter five that “after you have suffered a little while, the God of grace will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.” (5:10) Right in the middle of these thoughts the Spirit calls on us to cast all our anxieties on him, and here is why—“He cares for you.” No matter what difficulties might be going on in your life, remember this—Your God, your Creator, your Savior, your Father cares for you! He's at work. His mercies are new every morning. He is always faithful. All because—He cares for you!

Prime Time starts in September—Our next Prime Time Luncheon will be September 17. We are kicking off our new season of fellowship with Pastor Nathan and the Gate City Drivers. The menu for this month will be baked spaghetti prepared by our wonderful hospitality team. We do ask that you register for the event by calling the church office at 336.288.3824 by September 10. This helps us with the setup and the food order. We hope you can make it, and we look forward to seeing you there!

Joyner Supply Drive and Back-to-School Luncheon—Let’s celebrate what God is doing! Thank you church for all of the school supply donations and WMU team for serving and providing desserts! Our church staff played a get-to-know-you game and conducted a gift card raffle. It is a blessing to serve Joyner, and the wonderful staff are a blessing to us, as well. Let’s thank God and pray for gospel conversations. 

Hot Dog Lunch for Missions, September 27—We will have a hot dog lunch after worship to benefit our mission's ministry. As you may know, we have over 70 partners both here and around the world that we work with over the course of a year. Your generous donations will help us carry the gospel of Christ to all the world in 2027. You can either take a carryout with you before you leave or eat with your church family in the CLC. No reservations are required, only your donations. Volunteers are needed on the day of the event; sign up online. We look forward to seeing you on September 27 as we work to support our mission effort worldwide.

Life Chain—will be Sunday, October 4 from 2:30-3:30 pm. We will again be along North Elam Ave. to Carroll St. in front of Krispy Kreme. Join us as we stand for life and pray for those considering abortion, seeking healing after an abortion, and for escorts, clinicians, and others to leave this dark profession. We believe in God who shines light into darkness and who redeems and restores. Let’s pray together. 

Feed the Hunger Packathon, November 22—There will be two time slots to choose from: 1:30-3:30 pm and 4:30-6:30 pm, and registration will be available soon. All ages are invited to help us pack not 5,000, not 10,000 but 60,000 plus healthcare packages to local and global gospel partners providing for those at risk. 

Shepherd's Shelf food pantry—The September meal of the month is a favorite: breakfast. The church is providing breakfast sausage, and we are requesting donations of:

• Box of pancake mix (32 oz, any brand)
• Bottle of maple syrup (24 oz, any brand, plastic). 

We're also asking if you would provide items for the Shepherd's Shelf "get an item free" table:

• Yellow cake mix (15 oz box)
• Chocolate icing (16 oz container/tub, any brand).

Cake mix and icing are probably the items most often selected from the "free" table. You should be able to shop the breakfast items and the cake mix/icing for around $10. Be on the lookout for the September items of the month flyer in your Life Group folder and on the donation table beside the church office.

Another thank you this month to Shirley Garlow and Paul Copple for providing tomatoes and cucumbers from their gardens. Our families love getting fresh produce, so keep Shepherd's Shelf in mind if you have more garden veggies than you can handle.

Healing Hearts Widows Ministry—The next monthly meeting will be September 12 at 11:30 am. The Seabolt family has graciously invited us to enjoy their beautiful pavilion overlooking a pond. We will have pizza, chips, soda, and homemade ice cream with outdoor fun and fellowship. Please RSVP by calling the church office at 336.288.3824 to sign up so that we have plenty of food.You will receive the address when you RSVP. All widows are welcome, and we look forward to seeing YOU!  

Ladies’ Wednesday Morning Bible Study—Beginning Wednesday, September 9, Dr. Donna Navey will teach the series “Patience Is Contentment." The study will meet weekly at 9 am in the Chapel. Ladies of all ages are welcome to attend, and materials are provided.

MOMS (Making Our Mothering Significant) Discipleship—September 9 is the kickoff date for the fall study and mentoring series for mothers of young children. Each Wednesday teaching in the Chapel will be from 9-10 am followed by breakout groups from 10-11 am in the Fellowship Hall. Childcare is available, and online registration is open on Church Center.

Ladies’ Wednesday Evening Bible Study—The 7-week series “When You Pray,” a study of prayers in the Bible, will begin September 23. Angela Jackson will facilitate the study on Wednesdays at 6:15 pm in room 362. Registration on Church Center closes September 20 and includes information about purchasing a book in advance.

Women on Mission—where women come together to serve our community and beyond. Please join us for our Missions Kickoff on September 12 at 10 am in the CLC.   

Precept—The fall semester for this ladies’ Bible study will begin September 15 at 10 am in room 236 with the “Covenant” study. Workbooks ($25) are in the church office for purchase.

NC Baptists Women’s Conference—September 19 at 9 am (doors open at 8 am). The theme is “Seated and Sent” with a special track for high school girls. Your $30 ticket includes sessions, snacks, lunch, and a copy of the book Sent by featured speaker Heather Holleman. Online registration closes September 14.

Kalos Conversations: Women’s Monthly Intergenerational Ministry Meeting—Please join us on Sunday, October 4 at 4 pm for a time of worship, instruction, testimony, and small group discussions using the "Kalos Conversations" methods for biblical connection for women of all ages. Childcare will be provided. Men’s Ministry—Our monthly meeting will be September 6 at 4 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Join us for a time of worship, Bible study, and fellowship. Middle school and high school young men are also invited to participate.

70th Anniversary Celebration, September 13—We will have a special worship service followed by a celebratory lunch in the CLC catered by Stamey’s Barbeque. (Life Groups will not meet.) Registration for the luncheon is required to attend and closes September 3.

Called Business Meeting, September 27—There will be a called business meeting during the 10:30 am Worship Service for the Constitution Committee to recommend changes to the Constitution and By-laws. Copies of the proposed changes will be available in the lobby for any active church member to pick up and review that day.There will be a time available for discussion of the proposed changes during the Quarterly Family Business Meeting on October 25 followed by a congregational vote in November.

Hot Dog Lunch for Missions, September 27—Stop by the CLC directly after the worship service to get lunch as takeout or to eat in the CLC. The lunch will last until 1 pm, and your donations will support Lawndale’s missions opportunities.

Shepherd's Shelf—Please continue to pray about volunteer opportunities to serve with Shepherd's Shelf or any other church ministry. We continue to invite you to visit on Tuesdays to see Shepherd’s Shelf live and in action! Contact Linda Register (rlindar@bellsouth.net) if you are interested in volunteering or visiting. Every week we see the Lord’s blessings for this ministry as He provides for Shepherd's Shelf, and all the support from our church family and church staff. It is truly a church-wide ministry.

Assist with Processing Shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child—We plan to take a team to the Charlotte processing center November 30-December 2 to join Samaritan’s Purse in processing shoe boxes for the Operation Christmas Child outreach. Your only costs are for a basic hotel and meals. The hotel cost is $115.09 per room per night (2-night stay) and can be split with a roommate. Charlotte is one of eight U.S. processing centers. Last year’s Charlotte trip allowed volunteers from Lawndale to partner with others from all over the country to process over 12.5 million packed boxes.
