Ninth Step Prayer

Higher Power,

I pray for the right attitude to make my amends,

Being ever mindful not to harm others in the process.

I ask for Your guidance in making indirect amends.

Most important, I will continue to make amends

By staying abstinent, helping others and

Growing in spiritual progress.

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT

The Twelve Concepts and
Our Shared Service Work

The Twelve Concepts help explain how service in AA works — who makes decisions, how responsibility is shared, and how trusted servants support the Fellowship.

They remind us that AA belongs to the groups. Service bodies exist to help groups, not to direct them, and group conscience keeps everything connected and accountable.

Throughout 2026, we’ll look at one Concept each month to better understand how our service structure works and how every group plays a part.

Concept IX

“IX. Good service leadership at all levels is indispensable for our future functioning and safety. Primary world service leadership, once exercised by the founders, must necessarily be assumed by the trustees.”

Concept IX reminds us that good leadership in A.A. is not about authority—it is about service.

A.A. depends on trusted servants who are willing to step forward, accept responsibility, and help guide the work of the Fellowship. Leadership in A.A. does not mean having control over others. It means using experience, judgment, and willingness in service to the group and its primary purpose.

At the world service level, the trustees carry an especially important responsibility. As A.A. grew beyond its founders, that leadership had to be entrusted to those who would continue safeguarding the Fellowship and helping its services remain effective for future generations.

Concept IX reminds us that strong leadership in A.A. comes from trusted servants who are willing to lead through service, responsibility, and example—always keeping the Fellowship and its primary purpose at the center.

Steps, Traditions & Concepts of AA

Step 9: "Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others."

Tradition 9: "A.A., as such, ought never be organized; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve."

Concept 9: "Good service leadership at all levels is indispensable for our future functioning and safety. Primary world service leadership, once exercised by the founders, must necessarily be assumed by the trustees."

Message from the Editor

Hey friends,

September brings the first hints of a changing season. The days begin to look a little different, the light starts to shift, and even here in the desert, there are small reminders that nothing stays exactly the same.

Recovery is a lot like that.

There are seasons when growth is easy to see and others when it is happening quietly beneath the surface. There are times of change, times of uncertainty, and times when we simply keep showing up and trusting what we've built along the way.

One of the gifts of recovery is discovering that change doesn't have to mean starting over. We carry something with us now. The meetings we've attended, the relationships we've built, the principles we've practiced, and the experiences we've walked through become part of the foundation beneath our feet.

As we move into a new season, maybe September is simply an invitation to notice that foundation and to appreciate how far we've come while remaining open to whatever comes next.

And for me, this season also brings the opportunity to continue serving as your newsletter editor for another year. I'm grateful for the trust and look forward to seeing where this next season takes us.

Thank you for letting me be of service,

Barbara
