September 2026 News & Updates

It’s almost September, and MVPASD is gaining momentum!

First, we would like to welcome our new members and their families. It’s great to see the club continuing to grow, and we’re excited to have you with us.

We have continued participating in events and shows with good success, while meeting lots of great people and supporters along the way. Our vehicle pool is growing too, and it’s becoming a very interesting and eclectic mix. Keep it up!

Convoy Radios

Marc provided radios for our convoy drivers, and they worked great! They helped keep everyone on the same page while traveling together, and we look forward to putting them to more use at future events.

October 4 — Our Local Show!

Don’t forget that October 4 is our local show, and we hope to have a great turnout. Mark your calendar, put it in your phone, set an alarm — whatever it takes!

More information will be coming as we get closer.

We Could Use a Photographer!

We would love to have someone take photos during our events, shows, convoys and parades — especially photos taken from outside the vehicles while everyone is on the move.

If you have a family member or friend who enjoys photography, let us know. Or, if you would like to participate in an event but don’t plan on bringing your vehicle, this could be a great way to join in and help the club.

You don’t have to be a professional photographer — we just want someone who enjoys taking pictures and capturing the fun!

San Diego Automotive Museum Opportunity

The San Diego Automotive Museum has contacted MVPASD about doing a single-vehicle evening display featuring one of our military vehicles.

The evening would cover the vehicle’s specifications, history and use, with the owner having an opportunity to talk about the vehicle while it is on display.

Interested in showing your vehicle but not excited about the public-speaking part? Don’t let that stop you! We can help with the presentation as well as transportation of the vehicle.

This has the potential to become a recurring event, giving us an opportunity to showcase different vehicles from the club.

Interested? Let us know!

MVPASD Pop-Up Canopy

MVPASD is ordering a custom club pop-up canopy for shows and events. It will give us a recognizable home base and help make the club more visible wherever we go.

If you would like to donate toward the cost of the canopy, please let us know. Any contribution is appreciated!

Club T-Shirts?

We’re working on a design for the first MVPASD club T-shirt

something members can wear to shows, parades, club events or just around town.

We want your feedback! What would you like to see on an MVPASD shirt?

New: For Sale Section

A For Sale section has been suggested for the newsletter, so let’s give it a try!

If you have something you would like to sell, submit:

  • A photo
  • Description
  • Asking price
  • Your contact information

We’ll include submissions in an upcoming newsletter.

Have You Checked the Website Lately?

Don’t forget about WWW.MVPASD.ORG. There have been lots of changes and updates, and more are on the way.

Take a look and let us know what you think!

Help Us Build the Newsletter

Have photos from a recent event? A story about your vehicle? A restoration project? Something interesting you learned? Send it in!

The newsletter submission deadline is the 20th of each month.

And yes — we need photos and write-ups!

When taking photos for the newsletter, please remember to take them landscape (horizontal) whenever possible.

Thanks to everyone who continues to participate, bring out their vehicles, help behind the scenes and support MVPASD.

Stay tuned — there’s more to come!

Broken Yolk Car Show August 9th, 2026

MVPASD convoyed to the Broken Yolk Car Show in Rancho San Diego, with HMMWVs escorting the Hagglunds BV206 on the three-and-a-quarter-mile journey to the show.

Once we arrived, MVPASD was staged right up front, where our vehicles attracted plenty of spectators, questions and comments throughout the event.

The BV206 was definitely a centerpiece of the display. For many spectators, it was their first time seeing a tracked vehicle like it up close, and the questions kept pouring in!

Adding to the fun, Susan won an award for her HMMWV! Congratulations, Susan!

The show provided some great exposure for MVPASD and gave us another opportunity to share our vehicles, their history and our club with the community.

After the event, we loaded up, convoyed the three-and-a-quarter miles back and wrapped up another successful MVPASD outing.

Great vehicles, great exposure and a great day for the club!

Restored Federal Signal Vista Light Bar

MVPASD is donating a restored lightbar from the 1990's to the San Diego Police Museum. Marc completed the restoration and on behalf of the MVPASD, Thank you! Great to see these go to good use for everyone to enjoy!

National Night Out July 30, 2026

MVPASD was proud to participate in National Night Out in Alpine, joining the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and the local community for the annual event.

National Night Out is a nationwide community-building campaign designed to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

The Alpine event featured an impressive variety of vehicles, including vintage and current patrol vehicles, armored response vehicles and military vehicles from MVPASD.

It was a great opportunity for visitors to get an up-close look at the vehicles, talk with law enforcement personnel and MVPASD members, ask questions and learn a little about the history and purpose behind the equipment on display.

Events like National Night Out give MVPASD another way to get our vehicles out into the community, meet new people and support the organizations that invite us to participate.

Thank you to everyone who came out and represented MVPASD!

MEMBERS PROJECT Update

The 1963 Praga M53/59 has now completed its electric power steering upgrade!

The steering column was cut to make room for the electric motor, and adapters were welded into place. We also modified the end of the column and added a removable steering wheel adapter. A new, smaller steering wheel was installed for improved comfort and to make better use of the Praga’s limited cab space.

The electric power steering kit came from EPowerSteering and was a relatively easy installation. The kit included everything we needed except for the custom mount, which we fabricated specifically for the Praga.

The system operates on 12 volts, so we connected it to one battery in the Praga’s 24-volt electrical system. Another minor challenge was that the Praga uses a positive-ground electrical system, but fortunately the power steering system was simple to isolate.

Then came the first test drive—and the difference was amazing! One-handed steering is now possible, and even parallel parking this 9-ton beast should no longer be a workout.

We installed the adjustable-assist rheostat knob on the dash, where it looks like it could have been there from the factory. The knob allows the driver to adjust how much steering assistance the system provides.

Overall, this was a great addition to the Praga and makes the 9-ton beast much easier and more enjoyable to drive.

Next up: the Dodge M43 and Gama Goat!
