There are so many dogs that come through our doors needing a second chance at life. They come to us in all shapes and sizes, with every different background story you can imagine. The hardest stories, the ones that steal your breath, are usually the ones that end up the happiest because while humans let us down, they also pick us up. They come in droves to help, no matter the circumstances. Foster, adopt, donate, volunteer, deliveries, last-minute pick-ups — there's no ask that goes unanswered.

For Zeek, the sanctuary was home for years. Foster families rallied around us and took him in when he was diagnosed with hyperarousal, a condition that makes him overstimulated. Despite this, Zeek remained such a loving dog. His energy was contagious, and his foster families raved about his demeanor. He was great on walks, never turned down a treat, knew tons of commands, and loved his people. Sometimes dogs just need to know they are safe so they can truly be themselves.

When a family came for Zeek, it was everything we had hoped for. It was the love he deserved. There's such light in watching the interaction between a senior and their new family. Even though we know it takes time, the right connection falls into place. It's like finding that last piece of the puzzle you've been searching for. You place it, step back, and can't remember ever seeing it incomplete.

Completing a family is what we do. It can be incredibly difficult when dogs come to us with no hope left in their eyes, but it's our job to reignite love's promise that no dog should ever know a life without kindness and that there's a place for every senior who steps into our sanctuary. Life can be cruel, but once they are with us, it's exceptional.
