Labor Day: Work Unto the Lord
This month we will be celebrating Labor Day. For a lot of people, Labor Day means two things: a day off and the unofficial end of summer.
Labor Day is a day set aside to pay tribute to working men and women. It has been celebrated as a national holiday in the United States and Canada since 1894. It is interesting that we celebrate work by taking a day off!
But Labor Day gives us an opportunity to ask an important question: What is your attitude toward work?
Colossians 3:23-24 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.
As Christians, we need to see our work as more than simply a job. Our workplace is a mission field. We need to realize that people are watching us and observing how we work, how we treat others, and how we respond to difficult situations.
If we go around complaining all the time, are constantly negative about our job, or have a poor work ethic, people are not going to be interested in hearing about our faith. If they know that we are Christians, our attitudes and actions should point them toward Christ—not away from Him.
On the other hand, when we have a strong work ethic, serve others, and are encouraging in our words and actions, people may begin to wonder what makes us different. That gives us an opportunity to share our faith in Jesus Christ.
Some people may never come to church to encounter Christ, but they may encounter Christ through you at your workplace. Look for opportunities to live out and share your faith.
Remember, your pastor may not be able to come to your workplace and witness to your coworkers—but you can.
So, this Labor Day, enjoy your day off, but also remember the calling God has given you every day you go to work.
Work unto the Lord. Serve Him well. Let your work be a witness for Christ!
