Featured Creature:

The Eagle Rays of Cozumel

With winter approaching, Cozumel's eagle rays are returning from the broader Caribbean, including the Bahamas and Florida.

Peak season is December through March. You can encounter them flying along deep walls, or digging in the sand for their favorite food: mollusks and crustaceans hiding in the sand.

These shy creatures have a "wingspan" up to 12 feet across. Most are in the 8-10-foot range.

On Palancar Reef this pair of rays treated us to an underwater ballet before "flying off."

This ray let me tag along for a while, an exciting moment!

Diver Karen Farnsworth watches a ray foraging for mollusks hiding in the sand as a permit fish hopes for an easy meal, flushed out by the ray.

Karen in the photo provides a good size perspective of the eagle ray.

This ray was hunting in the sand, apparently unperturbed by the "noise pollution" from the boats above, and then it flew away.

A group of eagle rays approaches us, flying in formation along Cozumel's famous "Eagle Ray Alley."

And then a final, dramatic moment as a giant ray "flys" overhead! VERY EXCITING!

Contributing Photos & Videos

Many Sea-gram fans send in interesting photos for you to enjoy.

This photo was sent in by Lorraine Fico White, who encountered some interesting "beach art" near the Carolina Beach Pier on Carolina Beach, North Carolina:

"A sea shell sea turtle!"

A Fascinating Video From Tom Helmke!

Frequent Sea-gram contributor Tom Helmke sent us another interesting video.

This one features a momma octopus and her eggs!

Another Contributing Video.

Not to be outdone by her Dad, Tom's daughter, Rebecca Courtright, sent us this video, of a ghost crab on the National Seashore, at Assateague Island, Maryland.

It was fascinating to watch this crab with it's weird periscope-like eyes, foraging along the beach.
