Join the Orcas Island Historical Museums in celebrating the restoration of the historical Jorgensen Barn, currently stewarded by the Knapp Family. The Knapp Family restored the original 1883 barn themselves, with wood cut from their own property on a mill they built by hand. The celebration will include barn tours, saw mill demonstrations, yard games, and more! There will be hand tossed pizza by PizzACab available for purchase, with funds benefitting the Museums. This celebration is free to attend and a wonderful outing for the whole family!

PUBLIC REVIEW PERIOD FOR THE SAN JUAN ISLANDS DESTINATION MANAGEMENT PLAN EXTENDED | |

San Juan County has released the preliminary draft of its Destination Management Plan (SDMP) and extended the period for public review and comment until October 31. The plan is an effort to make sustainable tourism a centerpiece of island living by thoughtfully guiding visitation that both supports and enhances the unique quality of life, environment, and cultural heritage of the San Juan Islands.
The stated goal for the project is to deliver a plan of action to visitation that meets the needs of our community, environment, economy, and visitors by laying out a shared community vision, goals, and implementation measures to thoughtfully guide sustainable tourism in the San Juan Islands, now and into the future.
We all know Orcas Has Opinions and now is a great time to let them be known!!

TONIGHT!!! Join Long Live the Kings in a screening of the film “Call of the Orcas” highlighting the work of Ken Balcomb and the Center for Whale Research. Following the film, there will be a panel discussion including the film director Jessica Plumb and others who assisted with the research for the film. Light refreshments will be provided.
This story was filmed on the traditional and ancestral land and waters of the tribal nations of the Salish Sea. The production recognizes the vital role these sovereign nations and their people play in the enduring care and protections of land, water, and wildlife of the Salish Sea.

Enjoy dances of the Afro-Brazilian Orixas from Bahia, Capoeira, the Brazilian Martial Art born out of the resistance against slavery in Salvador Bahia and Maculelê, Capoeira’s signature dance, Xaxado from the northeast region of Pernambuco, and Samba, with its roots in Bahia which spread to Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and throughout the world. San Juan Islands Farm Tours and Dining Events
A Fall Favorite Returns with new Features
Island Farms on San Juan, Orcas and Lopez are opening their gates and fields for delightful and informative farm walks, talks, workshops and special farm-to-fork dining events September 22 through October 8.
This year, Island Grown, the local ag promotion program of the San Juan Islands Agricultural Guild, in conjunction with the Food Heroes program hosted by the San Juan Islands Makers Guild, are working with local farmers and chefs under support from the San Juan Islands Conservation District to coordinate over 32 farm tours on San Juan, Lopez, and Orcas Islands.
Local islanders and visitors are welcome to attend the tours and enjoy special educational presentations, music, and dining features.
New this year are:
- Music events hosted at Sweet Earth Farm and Madrone Cellars on Saturday Sept. 23 and a Saturday BBQ hosted by Aurora Farm on San Juan.
- The Food Heroes program on Orcas is hosting local fruit hard cider tastings on Saturday Sept. 30 at Warm Valley Farm and a farm lunch at Warm Valley Orchard on Sunday Oct. 1. (advance tickets required)
- Lopez Tours launch with a market garden tour and dinner at Midnight’s Farm that is co-hosted by the Lopez Locavores, Food Heroes, and the Makers Guild. (advance tickets required)
- Lopez and Orcas dining event proceeds benefit island school gardens, encouraging the next generations of local food and agriculture supporters.

A Special Farm-to-Fork lunch at Warm Valley Orchard on Sunday, October 1 during the Orcas Island Farm Tours benefiting the Orcas School Garden.
Come out and honor our local food and fiber shed at Warm Valley Orchard. Lunch in the orchard is hosted by the Island Food Heroes program and features three courses of delicious local harvests prepared by The Kitchen. Enjoy island wine and ciders, appetizers from Girl Meets Dirt made from WVO fruits, with heritage grain bread and island cheeses preceding the sit-down lunch. Tours of the sheep-to yarn-to textile studio of Maria Nutt and the orchards, livestock, and farm practices managed by Bob Nutt are available 10-noon and 2-4. Want to Exhibit Your Art? Now’s your chance. The Art Committee at the Orcas Island Public Library is seeking applications for the 2024 exhibit schedule. All types of art — painting, sculpture, photography, mixed-media — are acceptable.

Great Islands Clean-up Fall 2023

Join your Orcas Island community as we get together on Saturday, September 30th for the Great Islands Clean-up! Bags, grabbers and vests will be available for pick-up at The Exchange starting Monday, September 26th or meet at the Village Green at 10am the day of the event. Garbage collected from roads and beaches can be dropped off at the Village Green by 2pm the day of the event.

Slow Yoga and Chair Yoga with Susie Frank @ Orcas Senior Center – Slow Yoga: Thursdays, 9:15-10:15am; Chair Yoga: Tuesdays, 9:15am-10:15am and Thursdays, 10:30-11:30am
Slow Yoga, offered on Thursdays, 9:15-10:15am at Orcas Senior Center, incorporates the use of props and supports to help gain access to postures safely and mindfully. It is ideal for those new to yoga or those seeking a slower more supported practice.
Chair Yoga, offered on Tuesdays, 9:15-10:15am and Thursdays, 10:30-11:30am, is a gentle technique allowing seniors and persons with disabilities to practice balance poses without the risk of falling with the use of a chair as support.
An Orcas resident for over 30 years, Susie Frank has been practicing yoga since 2009 and received her yoga teacher training from 8 Limbs Yoga in Seattle in 2016. Susie suggests a $15 donation ($12 for members of OSC) per class, but nobody will be turned away for lack of funds. Join the ukulele Kanikipila, Hawaiian for “play music,” Mondays, 1-3pm at Orcas Senior Center. Adults of all ages with all levels of ukulele expertise welcome to join in or sit and listen. Other instruments are welcome.
Don’t know how to play the ukulele but want to learn? Participate in a twice weekly beginners’ ukulele class with Kathy Collister on Tuesdays, 11am-12pm and Thursdays, 12-1pm. Kathy will recommend resources to help get you started, and focus will be on learning introductory chords and strumming. There is no fee for the class, but you will need to provide your own ukulele.
