Many low lying roads in the County are still impassable at this time due to tidal flooding.

The US National Weather Service Wakefield VA is predicting minor to moderate tidal flooding to continue through the weekend as the storm system is not exiting the area as quickly as anticipated.

Coastal Flood Warnings have been extended through Saturday morning.

#TurnAroundDontDrown

This week, we'd like to take a moment to honor and thank our Gloucester-Mathews-Middlesex VA CERT members! If you missed it during the last BOS meeting, September 20-26 is National "CERT" Week: Community Emergency Response Team.

Our local chapter organized in 2007, and they stand trained and ready to help with disaster preparedness and emergency response. They learn about fire safety, light search and rescue, disaster medical operations, shelter organization and so much more.

You may also see them at the largest Gloucester events, like our Daffodil Festival and Guinea Jubilee, helping keep things safe and organized.

Do you want to contribute to their mission? Consider coming to a CERT training! There's a new member training coming up on Oct. 17-18, and you can get more information here: https://gloucesterva.gov/emergency-management/cert

Department Spotlight: GIS

You may know a lot about local government - but have you ever peeked behind the scenes of the GIS Department?

Our Geographic Information System team is trained to analyze, visualize and interpret spatial data. To put it (too) simply... these folks handle everything from assigning addresses to new properties, to designing local maps, to creating web tools that help our first responders.

Need to know if you're in a flood zone? Check their website. Voting precinct? On the website. Where's the nearest fire hydrant? They've got a map for that, too.

GIS Manager Rita Taylor started here in 1995, so she's seen it all. We're grateful she squeezed us in for a quick interview about what the department does, and what makes this role so special.

This year’s Guinea Jubilee is Friday, Sept 25th and Saturday, Sept 26th. The Jubilee is a two-day event that annually celebrates and honors life in Guinea. The event features cultural activities, arts and crafts exhibits, a fun run, delicious seafood, and a firework show to end the event Saturday evening.

We would like to remind residents that there will be increased foot and vehicle traffic in the area during the Jubilee and that there will also be a road closure on Saturday to accommodate the morning 5K run, 1-Mile Fun Run.

Times and specific road closures are listed below:

  • Fun Runs (Mark Pine Road) - 8:00-9:30am

Traffic control points will be established at 8:00am on Mark Pine Road, between Guinea and Little England Roads; Only one lane will be closed as GCSO will escort single traffic between 8:00-9:30am.

  • Parade (Guinea Road from Union Baptist Church to the Ruritan Club) - 11:00am-12:00pm

Traffic control points will be established at approximately 10:55 am. The parade will be on Guinea Road between Union Baptist Church and the Ruritan Club. The parade starts at 11:00am and should end no later than 12:00pm. Please expect some minor traffic delays as the road will be closed during this parade. If you live below the Ruritan Club on Guinea Rd and have an appointment during the parade times, you should make plans with this road closure in mind.

Lastly, the fireworks will be starting at 9:15pm on Saturday night. The Guinea Jubilee ends at 10:00pm the same night.

We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable weekend!

Let's work together to protect pets from rabies in Gloucester

Gloucester County Animal Control is partnering with some community organizations to offer a drive-through rabies clinic on November 7 at Gloucester High School.

Normally, rabies vaccines cost $20-$75, so getting your dog or cat protected for $10 is a win-win! You get to save money, and Friends of Gloucester County Animal Control VA gets donations to help take care of our shelter dogs.

Some FAQs about this event - there's no limit to how many pets you can bring through. Herd of hunting beagles? Bring 'em on! Crazy cat lady? We're crazy about your dedication to getting them vaccinated.

And no, you don't have to be from Gloucester to bring a pet through the clinic.

State law requires all dogs and cats over four months old to have a rabies vaccine. This is a great way to get that squared away. Take your sidekick for a pup-cup afterward; make a date of it!

Honor a Loved One. Keep a Gloucester Tradition Alive.

During the holiday season, Gloucester transforms into a warm and festive community, reminding us to pause, reflect and celebrate the people who have helped make our community so special.

The anchor to our downtown holiday tradition is the community tree. As of 2026, the tree is officially managed by Gloucester Parks, Recreation and Tourism, and we pledge to continue the memorial recognition tradition of generous donors with honor and respect.

Residents are invited to submit a name in memory of someone special with a $50 contribution to support the Community Tree tradition.

Your loved one’s name will be displayed on a memorial banner in the Courthouse Circle from December 1, 2026 through January 4, 2027. Their name will also be read aloud during the Community Tree Lighting Ceremony at 5 p.m. on December 5, following the Gloucester Christmas and Holiday Parade.

Don’t lose your spot on the court!

The deadline to register for Winter Youth Basketball is fast approaching. Get your player signed up and ready for a season of teamwork, skill building, and plenty of time on the court.

Registration deadline: October 5

Calling all trucks, big rigs, and cool heavy equipment!

Sign-ups are officially open for the 2026 Touch-A-Truck event, happening Sunday, November 1 at the Old Page Grounds!

We want to fill the grounds with awesome vehicles and equipment for our youth to see, touch, and explore up close. And let’s be honest, we know plenty of grown-ups will want to check them out too!

Have a unique work truck, piece of heavy equipment, emergency vehicle, construction vehicle, or something else that would make kids stop and say, “WOW!”? We would love to have you join us.

Participating is also a great opportunity to showcase your business or organization while connecting with families throughout our community.
