Dear Parents,
We are excited to inform you that on October 1, we will be taking our 3rd-8th grade students to St. Joseph Cathedral Cana Hall for an important presentation focused on supporting and inspiring actions to end bullying, cyberbullying, and suicide prevention. Several local Catholic schools will be in attendance for a presentation by the Megan Meier Foundation.
Because we live in a secular world where children are exposed to a variety of technology and material that is not age-appropriate, they need help understanding and processing this information. We encourage you to discuss as a family how to help guide your child with safety and security measures, limiting cell phone use, and parental controls on Technology. A workshop on Protecting Young Eyes for parents will also be held on September 30 at the St Joseph Cathedral.
The best guidance we can receive comes from attending Mass as a family, where students are guided in the faith and taught how to live a holy, faith-filled life.
Here’s an overview of the presentations by grade level:
3rd-5th Grade Presentation:
- Social Emotional Learning
- What is bullying
- Rude vs. mean behavior
- How to respond to cyberbullying and feeling left out/excluded
- Finding a trusted adult
- Mental health portion: Making them feel validated
6th-8th Grade Presentation:
- Sharing Megan’s story (not graphic in nature)
- Encouraging reflection on actions
- Use of technology and its impacts
- Bullying
- Effects of images and sending them
- AI impacts
- Finding a trusted adult
- Reaching out if struggling
- Mental health portion
For more information, visit Megan Meier Foundation.
A field trip form will be coming home on Friday. Please let your child's teacher know if you do not want your child to attend.

Committee members will collaborate with teachers, the School Advisory Board, and Home & School members to assess our school's strengths and identify areas for growth. We previously shared this information during the August Home and School Meeting, but in light of recent events in schools both locally and nationally, we want to keep you updated on the daily safety measures we implement to protect your children.
Our doors are kept locked at all times, except during morning drop-off, which is supervised by multiple adults at the main entrance. Our maintenance team conducts daily checks to ensure all doors are secure, and ground-level windows are reinforced with safety film.
Teachers and students are well-prepared for "active shooter" scenarios. We have a certified ALICE trainer on staff, and our teachers received extensive training a few years ago, followed by annual refresher courses each school year. Each teacher has a specific action plan for their classrooms and shared spaces like the cafeteria and playground. Additionally, we secure the main church doors during Mass and direct any extra attendees to a side entrance, where adults are stationed.
In the last week of August, we met individually with each class to review our safety plans, covering actions to take when with an adult and when alone. We also address home safety related to similar concerns.
Our campus is monitored by over 60 cameras that can be accessed remotely, along with various other security measures. We strongly encourage all adults picking up students to use a family hang tag, regardless of the pick-up location. For younger students, we recommend using the main lot due to increased supervision in that area. If you need additional hang tags, please reach out to Ms. Kelley at the school office (573-636-8922 Ext. 240).
Our staff remains vigilant and is quick to report any suspicious activity on or near campus. We also receive updates on security concerns related to events at the Capitol.
While our location near the Capitol presents unique security challenges, it also provides added protection. The Capitol police headquarters is just two blocks away, and their officers regularly patrol the surrounding areas. Additionally, Highway Patrol Officers are stationed within the Capitol, while the Cole County Sheriff's Department and Jefferson City Police Department are both five blocks to the east. The U.S. Marshals also have an office in the Federal Courthouse nearby.
If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Veit at Ext. 242. We prioritize security and therefore refrain from disclosing specific details of our safety plans publicly.

Monday, October 7th through Friday, October 11th, grades 3-8 will take the Iowa Assessment. There are a number of ways you can support your child before and after testing. It is important to remember the following points to ensure that your child is functioning at full capacity:
- Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep.
- Wake up at a good time so as not to be rushed.
- Eat a healthy breakfast.
- Arrive on time to school.
- Stay home if you feel sick (make-ups will take place the following week).
- Encourage your student(s) to do their best, but don't stress.
- Pray with your child(ren) in confidence, and remind him/her that testing is just one part of their total education
- Please contact Mrs. Garner at 636-8922 ext 327 if you have questions.
Monday, October 7th- Thursday, October 10th students are allowed to wear Spirit Wear with uniform bottoms. Friday, October 11th will be a dress down day for all in celebration of completing testing week! Please avoid scheduling appointments during testing week.

Those who chose to sign their child(ren) up for the Cole County Flu Clinic will receive their flu vaccine on Thursday, October 24. Please be sure to use age appropriate reminders and be honest with your child(ren) about what to expect when receiving a shot.
If you missed the opportunity to get your child(ren) signed up, flu vaccines are offered at doctor's offices, pharmacies, or the health department. The first and most important step in preventing flu is to get a flu vaccine each year!

The AC is responsible for supervision when St. Peter hosts athletic events. TO BE AN “ACTIVE” CATHOLIC STEWARD MEANS:
- To Pray: that is, attend Mass faithfully in the parish on weekends and Holy Days.
- To Participate: that is, to use one’s time and talents to strengthen the parish community and advance the Gospel.
- To Sacrificially Give: that is, pledge and remain current on a tithe of financial first fruits to support the life and ministries of the parish. The goal is 8% to the parish and 2% to other worthy charities.
