Shuttle service every half hour from OIHS between 10:45am and 2:45pm
Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the much-anticipated opening of North Shore Preserve on Saturday, September 28th! Located near the northwest corner of Orcas Island, the 58-acre preserve offers forested uplands, wetlands, and over 1,800 feet of natural shoreline with prime nearshore habitat for juvenile salmon and the forage fish critical to salmon recovery.
This weekend you can explore the Preserve on your own or join a guided tour. Tour details can be found on the Land Bank’s online calendar. Refreshments and a short photo journal illustrating a “preserve-in-the-making” will also be available.
Due to limited on-site parking, you are encouraged to use the free, roundtrip shuttle service the Land Bank has arranged for this celebration. Park your car at Orcas Island High School, in the student and guest parking area only. The shuttle will pick up/drop off on the half-hour, starting with a 10:45am pick up at OIHS and concluding with a shuttle leaving the Preserve at 2:45pm.
Following this weekend's opening, visitors are strongly encouraged to carpool or bike to the Preserve as there are only a few parking spaces available. Enjoy this beautiful area responsibly!

The All Islands Read (AIR) event returns this year with a mission to build community spirit through a shared reading experience featuring acclaimed author and musician Willy Vlautin and author and poet Jane Wong. This year’s program will expand from Orcas Island to all of the San Juan Islands, including Shaw, San Juan, and Lopez.

LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS ORCAS ISLAND VOTER FORUM
SCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER 16

The League of Women Voters of the San Juans, a non-partisan, non-profit organization, is
sponsoring voter forums for county residents to get to know the County Council candidates on the ballot for the November election.
All San Juan County registered voters may vote for both the District 1 and the District 2 County Council candidates. The District 1 candidates are Kari McVeigh and Stephanie O’Day, and the District 2 candidates are Rick Hughes and Justin Paulsen.
The general election is November 5, and the San Juan County Elections Office will be mailing the voter information booklet out the week of October 7. Ballots will be mailed to registered voters on October 16.
The Orcas Island forum will be held at the Senior Center October 16 at 5:30pm.
The voter forums are moderated events during which candidates will present introductory statements and respond to questions, within time limits. All four County Council candidates have confirmed that they will attend. The League of Women Voters requires civil discourse in forums, and all questions to candidates must meet that requirement.
The meeting will also be livestreamed by CNL2 (San Juan Today) at https://cnl2.com/. Community members who wish to ask questions of candidates but cannot attend in person may email their questions in advance of the forums to the League at pres.lwvsji@gmail.com. Please keep questions as succinct as possible AND note that questions may be combined or edited.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Gallery side of Laughing Cat Designs will be closing after Christmas. For the 20+ artists displaying their work there, it is a bright spot in Eastsound that will be sorely missed.
Gail’s studio side will remain open where her art will continue to be available. This winter, the studio will hold art classes and demonstrations by local artists.
The shop will be closed the weeks of September 24-29 and October 4-14. New fall hours are 10am to 4pm.

He has exhibited in museums, magazines, and photography festivals in the US and overseas. Food Planet Future - UP CLOSE borrows images from his traveling exhibition, which explores Dash’s fascination with how the agricultural system impacts climate and biodiversity. He explains, “Our food choices – what we eat, how it’s grown, and where we get it – hugely impacts the planet, and we all have the ability to make changes to reduce or even reverse those impacts.”

ANNUAL 'LIVE YOUR DREAM' EDUCATION GRANT | |
Soroptimists International of Friday Harbor is offering their annual award of $4,000 for a woman who is the primary support for her family, who is enrolled in a vocational training or other educational program, and who has financial need. This award can be used for any expenses incurred while receiving her education.

EDC TO OFFER PROJECT MANAGEMENT COURSE | |
The Economic Development Council (EDC) of San Juan County will offer a Project Management course as part of their Trades Training Initiative. This course is open to participants from San Juan County, ages 18 and over, who plan to use project management skills for paying work in the construction industry.
The upcoming course, taught by the Building Industry Association of Washington (BIAW), will include tools of Project Managers, the role of a PM during each phase of a project, and managing contractors.
The course will be held Friday, October 18 from 8:00am-5:00 pm at the Skagit Valley College San Juan Center in Friday Harbor. The course is free except for a $50.00 registration fee. Space is limited.

Fall Prevention Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance® Class at Orcas Senior Center
Join Karol Wilson, DPT, for a three month fall prevention Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance® class at Orcas Senior Center. Karol, a Doctor of Physical Therapy with 30 years of experience, is excited to introduce this evidence-based program, developed by the Oregon Research Institute. Tai Ji Quan is scientifically proven to enhance physical and mental health, manage chronic conditions, improve neurological function, and reduce fall risk. The class is tailored for ambulatory individuals with minimal reliance on mobility aids.
Classes are on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1:30 pm (no class October 10). The fee is donation-based, suggested at $15 per class ($12 for OSC members) or $100 for a 10-class pack. Financial constraints will not prevent participation.

Orcas Island Physical Therapy
Position: Licensed Physical Therapy Assistant
Description: We are the only outpatient PT clinic on the island. As such, we see a good variety of patients, mostly orthopedic with some neuro as well. We serve a very active population here, with patients ranging in age from 6 -103. This is a full-time on-site role. The Physical Therapist Assistant will work closely with the physical therapists to provide therapy treatments, exercises, and interventions to patients. The PTA will evaluate and document patient progress and provide education to patients and their families/caregivers.
Qualifications:
- Current Washington Physical Therapist Assistant license
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Skilled in collaborative teamwork

We’re looking for a Community Engagement Coordinator to connect with our customers, and bring our brand to life through exciting events, tastings, and in-store promotions. You’ll be the go-to person for all things fun, engaging, and community-focused!
What You’ll Do: Plan and host events, promote products, coordinate with all departments, and assist with POS tag and signage support.
Pay & Benefits: This is a full-time position with a starting range of $20-$27 DOE. Weekend/Holiday availability is a must. FT employees receive a 100% employer-paid medical benefits package after 30 days of employment.
