This Weekly Update by the Illinois School and Campus Safety Program links to new guidance from CISA on Anonymous Threat Response, and promotes the upcoming classes on site safety security assessment, threat assessment team training, campus threat assessment, wellness, Digital Threat Assessment®, and Advanced Digital Threat Assessment®.

CISA Releases Guidance on Anonymous Threat Response
"The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) released the Anonymized Threat Response Guidance: A Toolkit for K-12 Schools, a new resource to help kindergarten through grade 12 (K-12) schools and their law enforcement and community partners create tailored approaches to addressing anonymous threats of violence, including those received on social media. The toolkit outlines steps school leaders can take to assess and respond to anonymous threats, better prepare for and prevent future threats, and work in coordination with law enforcement and other local partners when threats arise. It is co-sealed with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which provided expert feedback on the toolkit’s key principles and strategies."
It "was developed to provide K-12 stakeholders with information to both protect school communities and limit the disruption and trauma that can be caused by anonymous threats. By providing guidance to inform decision-making about the urgency and credibility of individual threats, school and public safety leaders may be able to more effectively balance the full range of risks faced by K-12 organizations.
The toolkit emphasizes six key strategies for schools to consider when addressing anonymous threats:

Build awareness about reporting to detect threats early and deter future threats.

Develop a partnership structure that will help address threats. This includes school administrators, law enforcement personnel and mental health professionals.

Engage law enforcement to manage threat situations and decide when to scale response actions up or down.

Balance initial response steps to ensure the campus is safe. Most critically, treat each threat as credible, and from there, work with necessary partners to determine how to approach an immediate response.

When appropriate, tap into multidisciplinary threat assessment teams to support interventions and expedite response if the subject who made the threat becomes known.

Take steps throughout the school year to prepare for threats. Establish a response protocol and practice other types of emergency management activities, such as training exercises for staff."

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program is pleased to announce a session of the Site Safety Security Assessment class on November 4, 2024, in Galesburg, IL. The training provides awareness resources and preparedness training to enhance organizational capacity to conduct multidisciplinary site assessments. The process of conducting a school site safety security assessment creates opportunities to reduce or eliminate potential hazards and develop recommendations for improvement.

This comprehensive 2-day K-12 training on multidisciplinary, community-based threat assessment teams provides a history and background of threat assessment, targeted violence, threat assessment research, risk factors, and behavioral indicators of those who are intending to commit targeted violence against others. It also provides training on the concept and advantages of a community-based, multidisciplinary threat assessment system, team dynamics, threat assessment process, and management principles.

Campus Threat Assessment and Management November 14-15th in Macomb, IL
The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program is pleased to announce the class Campus Threat Assessment and Management will be held November 14-15, 2024, in Macomb, IL.
This two-day workshop for institutions of higher education featuring Gene Deisinger, Ph.D will help participants to better understand the dynamics of targeted violence and to develop and enhance strategies for early identification, assessment, and intervention with concerning situations.

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program is pleased to announce the class Preparing for the Unimaginable: An In-Depth Look at Wellness, Trauma Recovery, and Resilience will be held on November 19th, 2024, from 8:30 am - 12:30 pm via Zoom.

Sessions of Digital Threat Assessment® and Advanced Digital Threat Assessment® via Zoom
The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program, in partnership with Safer Schools Together, is pleased to announce 2 upcoming sessions of the Digital Threat Assessment® class and 1 upcoming session of the Advanced Digital Threat Assessment® class being held via Zoom.
The Digital Threat Assessment® training will enable participants to establish a framework to better assess all threats by constructing and considering the digital baseline of a threat maker by locating, documenting, and evaluating social media data through a threat assessment lens. A significant portion of the day will be spent engaging in hands-on exercises on the most prevalent social media platforms and associated search applications. Building upon the Digital Threat Assessment® class by Safer Schools Together, Advanced Digital Threat Assessment® advances participants' understanding of finding and curating relevant digital information consistent with real-life digital threat assessment data gathering scenarios. Significant engagement and hands-on practice will take place as participants are assembled into investigative teams and given a true-to-life mock scenario.
