Collaboration Key to Finding a Home for Christian

In January of 2023, Christian traveled from Norfolk, Virginia to Phoenix looking to start a better life after complications with his previous living situation. He came with the intention of "bettering himself and society." Upon arrival, Christian found employment, making $15/hr. Unfortunately, he needed to leave that role due to conflict in the workplace.

Shortly thereafter, Christian found another job as a dishwasher making $15.50/hr. Although he never worked in the restaurant industry before, he enjoys the job. Through these employment periods he did not have a place to live. Christian utilized several services on the Campus to help end his homelessness, including HSC Navigation, St. Vincent de Paul meal services and Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS) shelter. Next, Christian applied and was approved to move into an apartment complex. While awaiting his move-in date, he moved into HSC's "Project 8" Bridge Housing program. HSC Staff also helped Christian apply for and successfully utilize Flex Funds for move-in costs, so that he can save money for next month’s rent, furniture, food, and other expenses. As pictured here, on September 15th, Christian moved into a studio apartment.

Christian is an independent, motivated individual who is excited to begin his new life. The collaborative model of HSC and partners continues to help people like Christian to find a place to call home.

Episode 1 takes a very important look at the impact of flex funding on the effort to address the housing crisis in the Valley. McQuaid Mission co-producers and hosts, Amy Schwabenlender, CEO of the Human Services Campus (HSC) and UMOM CEO Jackson Fonder were joined by Richard Crews and Johnny Furtado from HSC to discuss disturbing data when it comes to the homelessness crisis and the best ways to help people stay in their homes or move from shelters back into housing. For example, HSC is seeking $1.5M per year to continue the successful Flex Fund program. To learn more, contact Amy at amys@hsc-az.org.
