Twenty members of the Dayspring choirs visited England in late May and early June, singing five Evensong services in Portsmouth Cathedral. This event brings a taste of that very traditional service back home to Tempe. Evensong is among the oldest rites in the Anglican tradition, dating back to the earliest days of the Reformation. It was first laid out, in virtually its present form, in 1549. The texts are similarly old, predating even the King James Bible. The main part of the service is the singing of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis (despite the Latin titles, the words are in English). We will sing one of the two settings the choir sang in England, a lively piece by Bryan Kelly. We will also chant a psalm, do the traditional responses, and sing an anthem by Moses Hogan. This is a contemplative service dominated by music; it will last about 45 minutes. The liturgy on October 15 celebrates St. Luke the Doctor (the author of the gospel).
We will take a free-will offering in support of the Dayspring Music Program.
