From Thornton Creek Site Council
Message from the Chair

Dearest Thornton Creek community,

Hello, and happy first week of school! I hope you and your families were able to spend some joyful moments this summer. I wish I could promise you "business as usual" as we get back to full-time, in-person learning, but we all know that this school year is going to again require our patience, flexibility, grace, trust, and diligent hand-washing.

As your Thornton Creek Parent Group chair this year, it is my desire to reach as many families as possible, to find out how school's going for your child(ren), what you may need assistance with, what your family loves best about TC and how to preserve that. Your family and voice are an integral part of the fabric of this community, and my mission is to be an advocate for you and your children to get what you need to thrive—I encourage you to reach out to me anytime at In this role, I also serve as the chair of Thornton Creek's Site Council, our school's co-governance body that includes parents, staff, and administration coming together to make important decisions about how we allocate our resources, from volunteers to finances. I hope you'll join our monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm via Zoom, but hopefully in-person eventually).

We're also (always!) looking for volunteers… Thornton Creek Elementary was founded on a cooperative model, and stepping up in whatever ways you're able to is an excellent way to build community with other parents during this time. The Thornton Creek Parent Group has many critical chair positions still vacant, including vice chair, co-treasurer, secretary, EDI (equity, diversity, and inclusion) committee, and others. No experience is needed, and I promise it's more fun than it sounds! Please email me at if you'd like to talk more.

One last thing: We know Covid safety protocols are top of mind, and we'd like to thank Principal Gerrit Kischner for working with us and PTA to put together an FAQs link that will be updated as new information is available. Have a question to add? Contact

Thank you so much for your partnership as we enter the 2021-2022 school year—as they say, we are stronger together!

From the Communications Committee
We're excited to let you know that we now have up and running! The SPS TC website has been great overall, but it also has been difficult to keep content current. While the .org website is still a work in progress, there is a lot of useful and up to date information there, with more on the way, so take a look!

As we move forward into the new school year, we're working with administrators and PTA to reexamine how communications are sent, and determine if there is a way to streamline or merge communications to reach all families as part of weekly or biweekly emails from the principal. This would benefit TC Parent Group communications because this newsletter is opt-in only, so only reaches families who already know about it. Our tentative plan is to continue sending out this newsletter biweekly, as well as special editions.

Whatever changes lie ahead, we'll do our best to keep you informed!

If you've moved on from TC, we'll miss you! There is a personalized unsubscribe link at the bottom of each newsletter, so you can unsubscribe at any time.

Feel free to email me at if you have any questions.

Thank you,
Emily Mitchell (she/her)
From the Volunteer Coordinator
COVID conditions and safety protocols continue to evolve. SPS is allowing a start to in-person volunteering for roles essential to school operation, depending on the specific needs and conditions in each building. With that in mind, Mr. Kischner is continuing to evaluate TC’s safety precautions and best practices on a month-to-month basis. We’ll keep you posted, but in the meantime, if you would like to volunteer at TC once it is allowed, please follow the steps below to make sure you’re ready to sign up when the time comes.

Step 1: Complete the volunteer application (or renew your application if you're a returning volunteer) through the Seattle Public Schools volunteer web page.

New this year: In addition to completing the Adult Sexual Misconduct Prevention online training course, reviewing the SPS Volunteer Handbook and filling out the Volunteer Application/Background check, all in-person volunteers must complete SPS' COVID-specific Health & Safety online training course AND show proof of receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. You can find more information and a link to the course on the SPS volunteer web page linked above.

Step 3: Hold tight! Those who share their interests through the TCPG Volunteer Interest Survey will hear back from the volunteer committee with next steps. Otherwise, we’ll reach out to the community through this newsletter and on the TCPG web page if and when parent volunteers are needed—you may also hear about opportunities through your teacher or the weekly bulletin from the school.

Thank you for supporting Thornton Creek!

From the Health and Safety Committee
Welcome back to the 2021-2022 school year! The Safety and Health committee continues to strive to provide education and valuable resources to our school community, both at the local and district levels. The start of the school year is here, and yet many of us still have questions and concerns about what the health and safety protocols will look like in practice. Please see the COVID related FAQs in this newsletter which should address specific health and safety protocols that are happening at Thornton Creek.

COVID-19 in our community:
King County, like much of the nation, is in the midst of a surge of the highly contagious COVID-19 delta variant. Public Health of Seattle and King County has this update: Starting September 6, in King County, masks are required at any outdoor event with 500 or more people in attendance. This will apply to vaccinated and unvaccinated people, 5 years and older. Masks are strongly recommended (but not required) in crowded outdoor settings where people cannot remain at least 6 feet apart. Follow the latest guidance here.

COVID-19 School related resources:
Here are several links that we have found to be useful for questions related to: what prevention measures are being used; when kids should stay home; what school COVID testing will look like; when to quarantine and for how long; what does physical distancing look like; etc?

We still don’t know when vaccines will be available for kids 12 and under. We do know that both Pfizer and Moderna are running clinical trials for kids and are pushing for emergency use authorization to begin as early as this fall.
There are a number of options to find vaccine appointments – check out Public Health Insider for a complete list of options in King County, visit the Getting Vaccinated page, or Washington’s Vaccine Locator tool.

Here’s to a Happy and Healthy school year!

Thank You!
Huge thanks to Jana Dilley, Co-Chair of the TCPG Facilities Committee, for wrangling a bunch of volunteers to restore the K/1 Courtyard! It was overgrown with thistles, blackberries, and everything else you can think of. After many bags of bio-matter were hauled away, it's a welcoming outdoor place for kiddos again, when they need it most! Thank you Jana and volunteers!
