From The Pastor's Desk...
"World's most ambivalent Welcome?"
        Greetings, beloved of Christ.  I am so excited that it is September!  The Church calendar is much fuller than it was in August, and our sanctuary has been, too.  And yet...  Covid continues to nip at our heels, and often does more harm than that.  For now, we have suspended coffee hour, and there are many people who cannot yet come to events like worship, Bible studies, and children's ministries.  I was ready for Covid to be a thing of the past, just like sin, or racism, or needing caffeine in the mornings.  Alas.
        And yet - and yet!  God is still good, and we are still receiving those blessings.  We will forge ahead in having as many things in person as we can.  Confirmation!  Bible studies!  The annual picnic!  New member receptions!  Youth Group!  BFF (Bible, Faith & Fellowship, a.k.a. Sunday School)!  Men's Breakfast!  Quilting Ministries!  Service projects like God's Work Our Hands Sunday!
        And we are committed to offering as many virtual events as we can.  Bible studies! Cambridge senior sing-alongs!  Streaming worship!  And we hope to add to these as we are able.  For those sharing faith online, help us to continue to involve and inspire you by sharing ideas.  You are present with us and are an essential part of our community.
        We will keep following the news, listening to the science, praying for one another, and reaching out as God makes us able.  Let's find our way, together.

Peace,
Pastor Wendolyn

is the love of Jesus."  - Mother Theresa

Last call for Round 1 of Polo Shirt Printing!
Cost is $22, please send funds to Church office specifying that it is for the polo shirt.  We hope to do another round of printing in the near future.  Many thanks to Tammy Miller for ordering and arranging embroidering of these conversation-starters.  Show your love of LoL!

Spotify users: Shared Playlist Opportunity!
Pastor Wen has created a collaborative playlist on the streaming service Spotify.  Search for "Lol-Loved Tracks."  You can listen or add songs, the goal being a shared space to celebrate our favorite music that is uplifting or speaks to the griefs of this world.  If you use a different service (Apple Music, Pandora, etc) consider setting up a public playlist with the same name and letting us all know about it via Facebook or the Sunday bulletin!

What is Mutual Ministry?
Every ELCA congregation has a committee called "Mutual Ministry," a group of trusted members who are there to listen to concerns members may have in a confidential setting.  Lord of Life has an excellent Mutual Ministry team, and it is a blessing to staff, members, and the whole congregation.  Unlike Council, they don't make policy decisions, but they care for how feelings and communication get lived out in the Church.  Our team is made of Bob Quinn (chair), Nancy Curl, Tina Leach, and Ed Harding.  Should you need to reach out to them, they are ready to respond!

Works In Progress:

Our Sanctuary "Pray-Ground":  We are trying out an idea to have a kid-friendly area in worship where little ones can move and play with minimal distraction (and really, that distraction just directs us towards God's love for all!).  We are looking for a small rug, quiet toys (Beanie Babies and Duplo blocks especially), and kids' fidget toys.

Pastor Wen Continues To Collect Small Containers:
1. Baby food containers, spaghetti sauce jars (glass or plastic), etc for a fall eco-project; and 2. Food items we can tape closed to build a little kitchen/food shoppe in the Fellowship Hall, for little ones to play while adults connect.  (Example - the Goldfish box in the picture).

Also:
Wire-bound journals (blank/lined inside).

And:
Items to fill our Welcome Packet cups (magnets, sweets, hand-written welcome notes, anything you can think of!).

Confirmation Angels

        Lord Of Life's Adult Ministry will be supporting our Confirmation Class members as "Confirmation Angels".
        Here is what it entails.  You will be given the name, address and brief information about a confirmation student.  You are asked to pray for the student and anonymously send them cards of support and encouragement throughout the school year, about once a month.  You can also mail little presents such as book marks.
        The students, of course, will be told that someone is praying for them, but you will remain anonymous.  At the end of the school year, there will be a "reveal party" for the students to meet their Confirmation Angel.  We tried this a couple of years ago, and it was great fun.
        If you would like to become a Confirmation Angel, please contact Janell Reich.  A link to her email is below.  Thank you in advance!

Tuesday, September 21st, At 1:00 PM

        The Book Club will meet again on Tuesday, September 21st to discuss "Lab Girl", a biography by Hope Jahren.  There are 6 copies available in the Burlington County Library System.
        "Lab Girl" is a book about work, love, and the mountains that can be moved when those two things come together.  It is told through Jahren's remarkable stories: about her childhood in rural Minnesota with an uncompromising mother and a father who encouraged hours of play in his classroom's labs;  about how she found a sanctuary in science, and learned to perform lab work done "with both the heart and the hands";  and about the inevitable disappointments, but also the triumphs and exhilarating discoveries, of scientific work.
        Hope Jahren is an award-winning scientist who has been pursuing independent research in paleobiology since 1996, when she completed her PhD at University of California Berkeley. She is the recipient of three Fulbright Awards and is one of four scientists, and the only woman, to have been awarded both of the Young Investigator Medals given within the Earth Sciences.

Afghanistan Refugee Assistance
For Joint Base McGuire-Dix-
Lakehurst

        Lord Of Life will be helping newly arriving refugees by provided some basic, needed items.  Below is a note the Editors received from Quilting Ministry coordinator, Gloria Brosious, and other information from Pastor Wendolyn:

        The Joint Base expects to have 3,000 refugees.  Quilts For Kids, an organization here in N.J., will be donating 300 quilts.  Berry Basket Quilt Guild has already begun to make donations of quilts and the items that have been requested.
        The Pastor, who is a Counselor at the base, has been in touch with several organizations such as my Quilting Guild.  I have asked my friend who is working with him if she can give me his name and phone number so we can work directly with him.  He is picking up items from her group tomorrow, so I should hear from her soon.
        St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hainesport's quilt group donated a carton of beautiful cut pieces of material that they cannot use.  The pieces measure 4" x 8".  I put together a child's quilt with some of the pieces.  I would like to see the material used to make quilts for the refugee children that will be at the Joint Base.
        As far as the items that are needed, below is a list of what is being collected.  Please only contribute new or very lightly used clothing (no holes, rips, stains, etc.), toys, and like items.:
Travel Size Toiletries
Sanitary Products
Diapers
Wipes
Sport Drink Powders (bottles or mixes.  Gatorade, etc.)
Non-perishable Snacks
Men and Boys Pants (in all sizes) (MOST Needed)
Other Clothing Items (no undergarments needed at this time)
Stuffed Animals or Small Toys,
New or Gently Used Toiletry Bags
Infant Formula
Snacks For Small Children
Pedialyte
        Donations should be placed in the box labeled "Afghani Relief" which is in the church Narthex.
~~~
        In the future, we may want to think of providing English textbooks or easy-reader books, sewing machines and fabrics, art supplies (for processing grief), or more long-term settlement support.
         The two links below will provide information about the refugees being housed at Joint Base MDL.
Thank you in advance for your anticipated generosity!
Assembling Youth Quilts
Thursday, September 16th, 10:00 AM
Fellowship Hall
        The Quilt Ministry will be meeting on Thursday, September 16th at 10:00 AM in Fellowship Hall.  I will have the fabric at that meeting.  The strips can be put together in several ways.  If you have time before that meeting date, I am inviting you to call me (609-859-5505) to set up a meeting at my house, and I can get you started on this project.  We will keep it simple.  My sample was machine quilted, but we can still make them by the "tying" method used for our normal quilt projects.  I will make a tied one as a sample that will be brought to our meeting.
Some "Notes",
From Worship And Music Director,
Rick Krause:
HELP WANTED!
        The LOL Music Ministry Team is searching for people to participate with the Praise Team.  There is a need of singers and people who play instruments.  Our goal is to meet once a month (date and time to be determined) to review music for the month and increase participation.  Most importantly, it is not a "lifetime" commitment--you can join us whenever you can.  All ages are needed--no experience necessary--just a desire to proclaim the Good News!  If interested in finding out more, please speak with Rick Krause or Pastor Trozzo.
CHANGE???
        Starting in September, the 10:00 AM Prayer, Praise, and Thanksgiving service will be a little different.  There will be some minor changes in the order of the service as well as a focus on more recent contemporary music.  The goal is to have a "key song" that will reinforce the theme of the day and provide those attending with an uplifting experience at worship.  If you have any suggestions for songs, please see Rick Krause of Pastor Trozzo.
JAM SESSION
        Do you like to play music?  Rick Krause and Paul Rodgers are looking to have a "Jam Session" one night at church.  This event is open to anyone and everyone who likes to play, sing, and enjoy all types of music (you don't have to be a member of LOL to attend).  We are looking to have a session one night in September--probably during a weekend--but no definite date has been set.  Please look for details in the church bulletin and an announcement at worship.  You can also touch base with Rick Krause, Paul Rodgers, or Pastor Trozzo for more info.
        ELW Hymn #817 has become one of our "regular" hymns at Lord of Life.  It was composed by Cesáreo Gabaráin (April 30, 1936 - April 20, 1991), who was a Spanish priest and composer of liturgical songs and hymns.  He received a Gold Record Award in Spain, and his music is well known and sung by English and Spanish-speaking people.  Gabaráin became a hymn-writer when he was thirty years old and went on to write about five hundred pieces of music.  He tried to write songs that were easy to learn and be sung by the entire congregation.  His hymns support moments of personal and communal prayer and praise to God.  Enjoy!.
"As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea-for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, "Follow me and I will make you fish for people." And immediately they left their nets and followed him."
