- Conditions will deteriorate throughout the day today with up to five inches of rain expected through midnight

-Wind gusts up to 50 mph are possible later this evening into tonight

-There is a threat of tornadoes beginning around 10 p.m. continuing through the overnight hours

Tomorrow, we will see sunshine and mild conditions. As Ian turns extratropical, moisture will wrap back around bringing more rain, gusty winds and the threat for tidal flooding Sunday through Monday.

**Parks will be closing at 4:00 today due to high winds.** 

Gloucester County Emergency Management has launched a new emergency notification service for citizens called the “BEE Alert.” All citizens must manually register to receive emergency notifications even if they are already registered with the old system, CodeRED. Data from CodeRED was not automatically transferred over to the new system, which uses Everbridge technology. While registration for BEE Alert will be ongoing, citizens are asked to register as soon as possible to avoid missing any emergency notifications.

Fire, Smoke, and Muskets Program Scheduled for Oct. 1-2 CANCELLED

This weekend's Fire, Smoke, and Muskets Program has been CANCELLED due to the impending inclement weather from Hurricane Ian.

Cleanup When Safe to Do so

A message from Clean Community: Since the weather is not working in our favor, Clean Community will not be next to the library on Saturday morning.

Please do your cleanup when it’s safe and weather permitting. You can reschedule your cleanup for next weekend if you prefer.

Signups and Supplies will still be available all next week. 

Trash bags can be brought to any of the 5 convenience centers as there will no longer be a dumpster next to the library this weekend.

If you do cleanup, please hold on to supplies until next week as we don’t want things blowing around behind the building.

They can be returned Monday – Friday 8:30am-4:30pm at the Stewart Building, 6382 Main Street.

Rappahannock Community College Scholarship Application Now Open

The Rappahannock Community College (RCC) scholarship application for the 2023/2024 academic year is open from October 1 through February 18, 2023. Any student planning to enroll at RCC for the 2023/2024 academic year is encouraged to apply. Applicants simply complete one online application form to be considered for over 100 different scholarship awards.

RCC scholarships can be combined with federal and state financial aid or used alone to cover the cost of RCC tuition and fees. Completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is highly recommended in order to help match students with funding. Award criteria ranges from county of residence to program of study; number of credit hours and academic merit; community service and more.

The average scholarship amount is $1,561, which represents approximately 30% of full-time tuition and fees and even more if a student attends part-time.

Parks, Recreation and Tourism Offerings for this Week

YOUTH BASKETBALL

Parks, Recreation & Tourism is sponsoring Basketball Leagues for ages 6-7 coed, 8-9 coed, 8-9 girls, 10-11 coed, 10-12 girls from November 12 through February 18. Teams practice twice a week on week nights and play games on Saturdays. The fee is $47 and the deadline to register is October 30.

ZUMBA

Parks, Recreation & Tourism is sponsoring ZUMBA for ages 16 and older on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:45-7:45 at Abingdon. October session is $64 for the whole month (skip 10/31) or $9 per day for individual classes. The deadline is September 28.

KARATE

Parks, Recreation & Tourism is sponsoring Karate for ages 4 and older on Mondays or Thursdays at TC Walker. Monday classes run from October 10 to December 12 and Thursdays classes are October 13-December 15. The Fee is $43-$47 and the deadline to register is October 10 and 13.

SPECIALTY INSTRUCTORS

Parks, Recreation & Tourism is seeking individuals that are interested in teaching classes for youth or adults. Dance, gymnastics, yoga, exercise, crafts, arts, games, knitting, carving, and just about anything else you are interested in sharing. Visit the county’s webpage and look for job opportunities, all applications must be online.

Registration Open for 2022 Christmas and Holiday Parade 

Time to start thinking about the Holidays! Registration is now open for the 2022 Gloucester Christmas and Holiday Parade to be held on Saturday, December 3 at 3:00 pm on Main Street.

Here is a link to registration: https://secure.rec1.com/VA/gloucester-county-va/catalog. Registration is online only. If you need help registering, please visit the Stewart Building at 6382 Main Street and staff will help you register.

The parade is limited to the first 60 entries.

Businesses are $20 per unit, Non-profits are $10 per unit, Schools and County entities are free.

The deadline for registration is once 60 entries are filled or November 13.
