National Suicide Prevention
Awareness Month

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, next week is National Suicide Prevention Week, and September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day. To help promote suicide prevention awareness, in addition to the mental health resources we shared in last week's Weekly Update, here are some resources to consider reviewing and sharing.

IASA Adds More Resources to Illinois Schools Step Up Toolkit

The Illinois Association of School Administrators has added additional resources to the Illinois Schools Step Up Toolkit, including information on COVID testing kits for schools, Joint Statement on Teacher Evaluations, Illinois Schools Step Up Webinar series, information on acquiring masks, and more.
FDA Issues Warning About Hand Sanitizer Packaged in Food and Drink Containers/Having Food Scents Added

The US Food & Drug Administration is warning consumers about hand sanitizer being packaged in food or drink containers. They have also found instances where food scents have been added to the sanitizer. This poses a risk for accidental ingestion, especially when some of the packaging has included cartoon characters on "a pouch that resembles a snack" and/or the product has a "pleasant smell."

To help prevent accidental ingestion, consider options for keeping products out of the reach of children until they need to be used. Also, mark the containers as dangerous if they don't already have clear warnings on them. In addition to regular poison control stickers, some kid-friendly options for marking containers could include using Mr. Yuk stickers or a similar yucky face and then educating children on what the sticker or symbol means.
