From the Desk of Fr. Mike Nacius, Pastor
-------Faith is a gift from God, that we receive, and that we develop while we journey in faith on Earth. Many in our parish are “cradle Catholics”; they have been brought up in the Catholic Church. There are many in our parish, who are parishioners who have come into the Church through the RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. There are some in our parish, that have been raised in another Christian faith tradition and support their spouse and children in living the faith and the traditions of the Catholic Church.

-------The RCIA team has been meeting with people over the summer that are interested in learning more about a life as a follower of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, born of the Blessed Mother, in the Catholic Church. The RCIA team is hoping that you will assist them in passing on the word, extending the invitation, encouraging those who are not Catholic, to begin the RCIA program this month. There are steps along the way for people to deepen their resolve to grow in a relationship with Jesus, lived in the Catholic Church.

-------The RCIA program begins formally next Wednesday, September 14 at 6:45pm. We will be meeting in the Parish Center. All who are interested in learning more about the faith, about being a follower of Jesus, are invited to attend. Please reach out to Lore Nugent or another member of the RCIA team to learn more about joining others in the RCIA this fall. (Please see more RCIA information farther along in this bulletin.)

-------The Religious Education department is very excited about bringing back the Children’s Liturgy of the Word, CLOW, at the 10:00am Sunday Mass. Following the opening prayer, the CLOW catechists and children ages kindergarten through 6th grades come forward in the sanctuary to receive a blessing from the priest. The catechists lead the children over to the school where they share with the children a “child focused” homily/lesson on the Sunday scriptures. The children with the catechist come back to church for the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

-------Families are invited to attend the 10:00am Mass and send their children forth for the Children’s Liturgy of the Word. The next session of CLOW will begin later this month and we will keep you informed of the date. For more information about this wonderful program at St. Mary’s please reach out to Joy Pacheco at (847) 582.2524. Also reach out to Mrs. Pacheco if you would like more information regarding enrolling your child in the RE program.

-------The year 1972 was very special for many in our parish. It was 50 years ago, in 1972, that couples entered into the Sacrament of Marriage. Cardinal Cupich and the Archdiocese have a very special Mass and blessing for couples celebrating their Golden Wedding anniversary – to register for the Archdiocesan celebration, please visit pvm.archchicago.org/events/golden-wedding. If you have any questions regarding this Mass, please email GoldenWedding@archchicago.org.

-------You are invited to come and pray at St. Mary’s whenever your schedule allows, for private prayer as well as for sharing in the Eucharist. Thursday, September 15 we will have a special opportunity to join others in a “Prayer for Peace”, invoking the intercession of the Blessed Mother. The church will be open following the 7:30am Mass and you will be able to spend time in prayer with the International Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady of Fatima, on the US Tour for Peace. A full schedule will be posted in next weekend’s bulletin.

-------Thanks to Deacon Jack and Deacon Bob for inviting our support of the “Hope’s on the Way” ministry of deacons throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. You can bring items (listed in the article on the next page) to support this outreach next weekend and place your donations in the baskets at the entrances to the church.

-------May God guide and bless us with hearts of compassion and forgiveness,
We wish to share with you an invitation to a wonderful program here at the Church of St. Mary. RCIA, Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, is a process by which adults, through inquiry and prayer, become members of the Catholic Church.

RCIA is primarily intended for those who are unbaptized and preparing for the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist, as well as those baptized in another denomination but seeking full communion with the Roman Catholic Church.

RCIA involves a series of 90 minute sessions, on Wednesday nights from September through June, with the pinnacle of the program being the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil, on April 8, 2023.

If you would like to know more about the program or receive further information, we invite you to our first session on September 14 at 6:45pm in the Parish Center. Please rsvp by email to RCIA@churchofstmary.org by phone to Lore Nugent (847) 582.2501. If you are unable to attend on September 14 please contact anyone on the RCIA Team listed below. We are all happy to make ourselves available to discuss the program in a little more depth.

May you know of and experience God’s love and blessings! We look forward to meeting you.

Help Provide Hope . . . Buckets of Hope
September 10 and 11
“Buckets of Hope” is a relief program run by a group of Chicago deacons known as “Hope’s on the Way” (HOTW). HOTW helps victims of natural disasters rebuild their homes, schools, and places of worship. In the wake of catastrophic flooding over recent years HOTW has been providing emergency cleaning supplies, or “Buckets of Hope”, to flood-stricken families. “Buckets of Hope” is a program in which 5-gallon buckets filled with cleaning supplies are shipped to disaster areas when it has become safe to start the cleaning process. Over 5000 buckets have been distributed through this program.
Each Bucket of Hope contains 14 common cleaning items, listed below:

1) Liquid laundry detergent, one 50 – 62 oz. bottle
2) Liquid household cleaner, 48 oz. mixed with water.
3) Dish soap 30 oz. bottle, any brand
4) One can of air freshener (aerosol)
5) One scrub brush, plastic
6) 18 cleaning handy wipes or reusable wipes. Two packages
7) One large auto-style sponge
8) Three to five scouring pads, one pack
9) 36 to 50 clothes pins
10) Clothesline (one 100-foot)
11) 18 (3 packages) heavy-duty trash bags, 30-45 gallon
12) One package of dust masks
13) Two pairs of disposable waterproof gloves
14) One pair of work gloves (leather palms necessary)
Recently HOTW had 280 “Buckets of Hope” shipped to Eastern Kentucky. HOTW’s inventory of cleaning supplies is now scarce and they are asking for parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago to help by contributing either some of the above-listed items for buckets, or making a cash donation so that HOTW can purchase these items. The cost to fill a “Bucket of Hope” is $35.

St. Mary’s will be collecting contributions for “Buckets of Hope” on the weekend of September 10-11. Contributions of cleaning supplies may be left in one of the church vestibules on Illinois or Green Bay Road, or at the Parish Center.

Financial contributions should be made out to Hope’s On the Way, and either placed in the Bucket of Hope situated in the Illinois Road entrance or brought to the Parish Center. A donation may be made anytime via GiveCentral. Be sure to write on the memo line "2022 Buckets of Hope Appeal." Rest assured that 100% of all donations go directly to the purchase of cleaning items.

Thank you for your support — Deacons Bob and Jack

STEWARDSHIP
“Everyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.” ----- Luke 14:33
When we first hear this statement, it seems that Jesus is making an unrealistic demand upon us. How can we renounce all of our possessions? We need them to live. However, what we must renounce is the belief that they belong to us. Everything that we have belongs to God alone. All of our resources are entrusted to us not only for our own use, but also so that we can help others. Once we renounce the idea that we possess or are entitled to anything, it is much easier to share the many gifts that God has given us. Then we truly are His Disciples.
