September 4 Greetings
Dear Ones,

It’s Friday, the end of the week with Labor Day around the corner, as we continue to “Be Church Together” even as we are apart. Remember that the church office is closed on Monday for Labor Day. Everyone please stay safe and cool!
God’s Work. Our Hands. Sunday is September 13. The Outreach Team met this morning via Zoom and has made a list of all the things to go in the ‘Thank You’ gift baskets for the Fire and Police stations, hospital nurses stations, library, Liberty School and the school district offices. The count, at this point, is 31 wicker laundry baskets! We have enough Thrivent Action cards at this point; now we are hoping for the congregation to fill in the other items. We need donations of the following items:

  • Travel size hand sanitizer and nice lotions for frequently-washed hands
  • Cases of individually wrapped nuts
  • Cases of individually wrapped chips
  • Individually wrapped candy (Costco has Almond Roca on sale, yum)
  • Cases of individually wrapped energy bars

We will meet on Sunday, September 13 at 1:00pm at the church to assemble the baskets and to write thank you cards. If you would like to write cards in advance and need some blank cards, stop by the church office during office hours to pick some up. Hey kids! We would love to see some of your artwork and cards too!

Please RSVP to the church office if you can come at 1:00pm on the 13th to help assemble baskets or write cards. We will also need folks to deliver the baskets when they are complete; this can happen any time after Sunday. Bring your masks, we will supply the gloves and the social distancing!

We are also talking about a group of folks to do reasonable yard work for our shut-ins or seniors. If you would like to volunteer to do yard work, give the church office a call!

We already have the project with the Navajo Mission wish list. The collection in the Narthex is growing, thank you to those who have already dropped off a donation. We will be taking this up to the mission that week of September 14.
Speaking of helping our neighbors…
We are still looking for a used washing machine for a Meals on Wheels client. She needs help with installation and removal of the old washer. (Remember the second floor issue.)
Here is what some other ELCA churches are doing during the pandemic.
The Music and Worship Ministry Team is planning our first Worship in the Park experience at Mountain Valley Park on Loos Drive at 10:00am on September 20! You are encouraged to bring your masks and lawn chairs and practice good social distancing. We hope to continue meeting weekly in the park for as long as the weather holds up. The blended service will be about 45 minutes long and will include communion! Emmanuel has had lots of experience being “church on the go”: setting up and taking down everything each week. We know that it takes many hands to make this work.
We will continue to record weekly worship and post them on YouTube for those church members who are at high risk or may be traveling. Don’t be surprised if your phone rings, we will be looking for volunteers for lots of tasks. I am certainly ready to see your smiling faces, even if they are behind masks!

Audio-Visual Technician

As Emmanuel looks to begin livestreaming our worship services, we have a need for someone to run the audio, video and lighting during each worship service. If you know of someone who has these skills and might be interested, direct them to the church website for the job description. Applications are available in the church office.

Keep safe and cool, check in with each other, and don’t hesitate to call me (310-890-9785) or the church office (928-772-4135) if you need something, or email emmanuelelca@gmail.com if you have something to share. Keep sending those pictures; we love seeing what everyone is up to.
