Tonight, I am looking at the Blue Moon – a special, rare sight– which we will not have the opportunity to see again until 2037. If being in nature inspires awe, like what I saw tonight, it is one balm for a lot of challenges that seem to be happening (in my life) at the moment. I am looking forward to hearing from Dr. Brad Lichtenstein on September 11, when he will join us for Community Conversations to discuss Resiliency and strategies to overcome challenges of today. I hope to see you there and that this eNewsletter finds you well! Whatever your current circumstances, let’s embrace today – the sky tonight reminds us to enjoy this very moment!

XCenters Will Launch in 2023 – With Transgender Friendly Care XCenter
|
|
On October 10, 2023, HealthAdvocateX will be launching a new initiative called ‘XCenters.’ The concept behind these centers is to provide credible, understandable and actionable information on a variety of topics through the lens of health advocacy. We want to highlight XCenters as a Center for Excellence, where ‘X’ stands for every individual’s experience, a reference to the superscript X in our name, HealthAdvocateX.
We are excited to be partnering with Malynnda A. Johnson, PhD, Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies for the Department of Communication at Indiana State University, who is conducting research and developing training materials to improve trans friendly care with medical providers and patient advocates. Her goal is to incorporate actual experiences from the Trans population as well those who may have been or are advocates for patients.
For Advocates
We will be launching this X-Center with a 4-part Live (and On-Demand) training module that will also be available for BCPA continuing education. If you are an advocate interested in learning more or if you are interested in being listed as a trans friendly advocate resource, please contact us at info@HealthAdvocateX.org.
For Transgender Patients/Family Members
If you would be willing to be interviewed as part of the project or would be interested in learning more about transgender advocacy please let us know. She can be reached via email at Malynnda.Johnson@indstate.edu

Since August was the National Awareness Month for Immunizations, last month’s Community Conversation discussed the recommended vaccines for adults. We discussed briefly how the immune system works and then discussed by age group what is recommended and why it is recommended. Thank you to Chris Price, MD for leading this discussion. If you missed it, you can view it here.

Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) Statement
|
|
OUR COMMITMENT
Approved by the Board September 21, 2022
Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) Statement
Our mission is to help people transform into active participants and partners in their own health care. To make this possible, we must advocate for inclusion, diversity, equity, and access (IDEA) for all individuals.
We recognize that:
- Racism is a public health issue that impacts various intersections and communities differently.
- Each person is unique and therefore experiences health care differently.
- Every individual deserves health advocacy regardless of their race, ethnicity, language, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, spiritual practice, financial status, education, geography, disability, mental and physical status, age, weight, substance use disorder or other factors.
- Our organization is uniquely positioned to raise awareness on IDEA in health and health care.
We are committed to:
- Raising awareness about the importance of IDEA in health and health advocacy in all aspects of care.
- Expanding diverse representation within our organization, expert presenters, and educational offerings.
- Intentionally messaging our values, sharing IDEA expectations for ourselves, affiliated advocates, and partnering groups.
- Creating space for respectful dialogue about representation, equitable access, and inclusive practices in health care and health advocacy.
- Educating our community and participating in opportunities about IDEA events and exercises to keep these issues in the forefront of our work.
- Implementing systems to ensure IDEA is pervasive in our organization.
We will reflect on our accomplishments with humility and grace. We will recognize our limitations and remain open to what we may not see or realize so that we can improve and or repair any harm.
