SIGN UP FOR SAFE CHECK

As an international student or scholar studying here at San Jose State University, your health and safety is important to us. We are launching a Safe Check text and email alert system. A Safe Check communication is generated directly by SJSU International Student and Scholar Services or International Gateway staff regarding an incident or event that may have an impact in or around campus, or it may be regarding an incident or event that occurred in your home country. The alert may request you to take action and respond to the message. If you receive a message from "SJSU International", you should respond as instructed as quickly as possible. We use this information to help us quickly identify whether you or your fellow students need help, or to ensure you have access to support you may want or need following an event at home.

If you have not done so already, we suggest taking the following steps to easily add pertinent contact information to your mobile phone. Not only does this guarantee you'll know how to get assistance in an emergency, this also ensures the communication mentioned above will be delivered from a known email or phone number so you'll recognize it right away.  Simply send a text message to the number 444-999
that says SJSUISSS or SJSUiGateway and you'll receive a link to easily add a digital content card right into your phone contacts in just a few taps. It is not an app to download, just an easy way to make sure you have contact information available in case you need help while away from home. Regular text messaging rates may apply. Alternatively, you can click this link from your phone and complete the same steps:

USCIS SCAM ALERT

Unfortunately, many F-1 and J-1 international students have been common targets for scams. Scams are fraudulent or deceptive services that try to acquire money from you illegally. If you feel that you have been a victim of a scam, please contact the police immediately.

The most recent scam that has been brought to our attention involves telephone scammers posing as USCIS representatives calling students and demanding that they provide their physical addresses, bank account numbers, and passport numbers. Please do not provide this very personal information as USCIS and most government agencies will not call you should they need to communicate with you. In the event that they need to contact you, they will most likely send you written correspondence via post. Providing this information may result in identity theft! If you feel you've been a victim of this particular scam, please file a police report immediately with UPD. Scams can  include (but are not limited to):

Banking scams

IRS impostor scams

USCIS impostor scams

Investment scams

Charity scams

Pyramid schemes

Lottery and sweepstakes scams

Telephone scams

Please visit the following website:  usa.gov  to obtain the most recent and complete list of scams. You should always be cautious and never give out your social security number, passport number, or bank ac count information to an unverified source or organization. Please also make sure your anti-virus software is up-to-date and you consistently change your passwords.

If you are unsure whether you are being targeted for a scam, you can also talk to us any time about this very important subject and we could help.

LABOR DAY HOLIDAY: MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 3

SJSU will be closed on Monday, September 3 for Labor Day.

As a result of the burgeoning labor movements in the late 19th century, American trade unions began clamoring for a specific day to honor American laborers and their significant contributions to American society. On September 5, 1882, a public parade was held by a consortium of labor organizations in New York City--primarily under the auspices of the Central Labor Union--which was considered the first Labor Day celebration on record.

The secretary of the Central Labor Union, Matthew Maguire, who was also a machinist by trade, is credited with originally proposing the idea of the Labor Day holiday. New York City was the first state to vote on a bill to make the first Monday in September an official federal holiday, or Labor Day. However, Oregon became the first state to pass this as law on February 1, 1887.

Have a wonderful Labor Day!!
