Women in CRE: An Evening to Remember | | Last week, our Women in CRE event brought together professionals from across the industry for an evening of conversation and connection. | Thank you to everyone who joined us, you all made the evening so special. If you couldn’t be there, don’t worry! You can relive the highlights in our photo album and re-cap video. | | | Get to Know Ryan Gaya, Co-Founder, Simplify Waste & Recycling Services | | |
What’s your favorite part of being a BOMA/GLA member?
Of course, meeting all the other members was great, but I also learned about segments of property management that I wouldn’t have been exposed to if I hadn’t joined.
What career advice do you live by?
Work hard, do what’s right even when nobody is watching, and treat people with respect. Hard work and honesty are the surest path to long-term success.
What do you love most about commercial real estate industry?
I love how dynamic it is. No two buildings are the same and each one presents a new challenge and an opportunity to solve it. And, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, the industry is full of great people.
What's a personal or professional project are you working on right now?
My latest personal project is the Family Photo Project. Gathering them all and organizing them on one platform and scanning the super old photos. It's a daunting task!
Fun fact that people probably don't know about you?
I was in a ska band back in high school. I played tenor sax - no clue how to play now though.

“Being involved with BOMA/GLA has added tremendous value to my role as a Property Manager. As a member for over 10 years, I’ve had the opportunity to grow both professionally and personally.
Serving as Co-Chair of the Spring Golf Committee for the past few years has been a fun and rewarding way to connect with others in the industry. The networking events have helped me build strong relationships, and one of the biggest benefits has been sourcing reliable associate members and receiving trusted referrals from fellow managers.
I also find the Power Hours and Regional Roundtables especially helpful for staying informed about what’s happening across different communities. It’s a genuinely supportive network that I’m proud to be part of."

| | What's Happening in Advocacy | | AB 380 (Commercial Rent Control) is Dead! | |
After an extremely successful trip to Sacramento last week for the California Commercial Real Estate Summit (CCRES), our BOMA/CAL board members leapt into action, speaking with over a dozen Assemblymembers and Senators. By the end of the week, AB 380 had been shelved. Thanks to the efforts of BOMA/CAL staff, our members worked directly with the author’s office (Asm. Mark Gonzalez) to secure meaningful amendments—and ultimately kill the bill. This victory underscores the importance of building strong relationships with our Los Angeles state legislative delegation.
Locally, we’ve met with the LA Mayor’s Office, the City Attorney’s Office, and 14 of the 15 LA City Council offices to discuss the negative impacts of ULA, the need to advance a self-certification motion, and our strong support for public safety and homelessness services programs.
| Looking ahead, we’ll be meeting with each of the LA County Board of Supervisors’ offices to encourage investments in public safety that balance compassion with accountability. We believe LA County should prioritize modern, safe, and rehabilitative facilities that protect the community while ensuring humane conditions for those in custody. We will also be addressing building decarbonization rules for existing large buildings and updates to Green Building Standards—emphasizing incentives and education over unfunded mandates. | | Policy Committees in Action | Our Sustainability Committee heard from Infinite Circulation Inc., who covered Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems, examining their pros and cons compared to traditional chilled water systems. We also discussed how they stacked up on energy efficiency and what property teams should consider when choosing between the two. | Strengthen Your Emergency Preparedness | Join us on September 24th for the Security and Emergency Preparedness Committee’s Active Shooter Preparedness Seminar. Gain critical skills to recognize early warning signs and respond effectively using the proven “Run-Hide-Fight” framework. This vital training features hands-on demonstrations, including “Stop the Bleed,” empowering you to strengthen safety protocols and safeguard your building, tenants, and staff.
