MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Building a Stronger Community Together

As the seasons change and we transition into fall, it’s a great time to reflect on the growth of our community and the lasting impact we’re making together. At BOMA/GLA, we’ve had an incredible summer of service, and I’m proud of how our members continue to step up and give back. Last month, we partnered with Building Skills Partnership for a school supplies drive, helping students across Los Angeles start the school year with the tools they need to succeed. And we’re just getting started!

Up next, we’re excited to support the 2024 BSP Annual Scholarship Gala , where the Martha Cox-Nitikman Scholarship will be awarded again this year. This is a fantastic opportunity to continue empowering the next generation, and I encourage you to join us in making this event a success.

We’re also continuing to deepen our engagement with The People Concern. Many of our members, building teams, and their tenants are getting involved in community service events, including the Homes Fore All Golf Tournament on September 30, 2024 at the Saticoy Club. It’s not too late to grab your clubs and join us on the course for a wonderful afternoon of golfing while supporting their mission of keeping Los Angeles housed, healthy and safe.

And don’t forget—our 2024 Annual Toy Drive is just around the corner. Building sign-ups open on September 16th, and signing up early gives you the chance to win a special prize. Help us bring joy to children in need this holiday season.

Lastly, we’re finalizing the details of some exciting partnerships with other local real estate associations in our community. Together, we strive to make an impact in unifying our communities around issues and information sharing that is important to our members and the industry. Stay tuned for more updates as we expand our reach and continue to strengthen our community efforts.

I encourage you to join us for one of our upcoming community events—whether it’s volunteering, attending the scholarship gala, or helping with the Toy Drive. Together, we can make a meaningful difference!

Say Hello to Pamela Huning, Senior Director, Breakthrough Properties

How long have you been a BOMA/GLA member?

Quite some time! At first I joined in networking events such as ChrisMix and attended Happy Hours at cool projects all over the city. Then I started volunteering with various programs and committees where leadership opportunities presented themselves.

Why did you join BOMA/GLA?

Networking and it was "the thing to do!" when I started my career in commercial real estate. I value it today for the same reasons.

What do you love most about commercial real estate industry?

It is so dynamic. Cycles bring out the strength and resilience of people adapting to change. I am especially grateful for each service provider I have worked with to "teach me the trade" of what they do, as I have a lot to learn from their expertise!

What is your favorite hobby?

Floral arranging - I started a side hustle this year working with others to create a floral arranging experience which is inclusive for all.

Best restaurant you've ever been to?

I love Ruth's Chris Steak House. Filet Mignon and a big glass of wine. Mmmmm.

What's Happening in Advocacy

BOMA/GLA Members Make Their Voices Heard in Sacramento

Last month, BOMA/GLA joined forces with real estate groups from across the state for the California Commercial Real Estate Summit in Sacramento. Our team held 15 crucial meetings with lawmakers representing most of our member space.

We zeroed in on SB 1103 and AB 2364, two key industry issues. Direct engagement like this is essential for our advocacy, as it allows us to highlight real-world impacts and strengthen our message.

The day after we left, AB 2364 was scaled back to a study bill, no longer imposing immediate workload limits. SB 1103 ultimately passed by a narrow margin at the end of the session. However, we have a chance at a governor's veto.

Policy Committees in Action

Our Sustainability Committee recently coordinated three great presentations for our members.

Don Davis of BOMA International presented on the implications of the U.S. Department of Energy’s new definition of "zero emissions buildings.” View the presentation here or read more about the definition here.

Michael Layton of ACCO Engineered Systems gave an excellent presentation on refrigerant code changes and requirements. View his presentation here.

Josh Miller from CLEAResult showcased the “Local Commercial Strategic Energy Management” program, which provides technical assistance, information, and incentives to install and implement energy efficient measures. View that presentation here.

We also had the Director of Security at 1 Cal Plaza, Louis Martinez, join our Security and Emergency Preparedness Committee meeting to share how you can prepare for earthquakes at your property. View their presentation here.
