CRYA Annual Dinner - Tuesday October 21st at the Columbia River Yacht Club. Open to all CRYA members and if you're in a Club then you too are a member!

This Year is Different!

  1. We have moved the dinner to one of our local Yacht Clubs, Columbia River Yacht Club is this year's venue.
  2. We have moved the date from December to October to help make it an easier decision to attend by avoiding Holiday events in December.
  3. The program is simple and short. Welcome our new Officers for 2026 and a quick recap of things accomplished in 2025.

What does that mean for you?

If you haven't been to the Columbia River Yacht Club lately there have been many new improvements. New paved paths just outside the dining area, water features and more outside seating when weather permits. The views from the dining area are second to none. The lead Chef has been making the Dining Experience a true pleasure.

It also gives you a chance to have a great dinner with other boaters from other clubs to make some new connections. More clubs have been having joint cruise/events this past year and this a way to meet others. The amount of knowledge of all the members and leadership is staggering. Come and find out things you would like to know more about.

Support of your Columbia River Yachting Association! This is not a fundraiser. It is a reason to celebrate boating as if we need more reasons. This year we can celebrate including Vancouver Waterfront into our Opening Day Activities. We are working as well to get the local docks repaired and maintained so that we can have safe locations to cruise.

You are welcome to bring friends interested in boat clubs as well to help recruit for the future. There is only upside to attending this event.

There will be a cash bar open from 6:30 to 8:30, doors open at 6:30 with a buffet dinner starting at 7pm. Wine can be brought to the event but make sure to take it to the bar so it can get the corking fee required for outside alcohol. We will have a sign-up link available shortly and the cost will be $45 per person. Tip for the food service is included as well. A great price for a great meal and venue.

Menu:

· Chopped wedge salad: iceberg lettuce, red onions, tomatoes, and bacon tossed with blue cheese dressing.

· Pasta salad: Cavatappi pasta, roasted vegetables, arugula and balsamic vinaigrette.

· Dinner Rolls and butter.

Choose a Protein:

· Grilled chicken breast: with chardonnay cream sauce.

· Cedar planked salmon: baked with mesquite honey glaze.

· Roasted Vegetables -Asparagus, baby carrots, cauliflower & roasted sweet peppers.

Dessert:

Inboard Boat Exhaust Hump Hose Inspection

It might keep you from sinking!

Boats can be a lot of fun. Keeping up on the general maintenance very much helps to keep that experience positive. One thing that is often overlooked is the condition of the exhaust hump hose. That small section of exhaust hose that connects the engine exhaust to the boats exhaust system. A typical Inboard engine will pump about 50 gallons a minute when making power through the engine and out the exhaust. If that critical section of the system fails, not only do you get most of that water entering your engine room, but in the case of a diesel inboard all of the exhaust soot as well. And that soot will be a long-term process to remove it all. Wear can occur from a slight pulsing in the exhaust system caused by the exhaust meeting the Shower flange and creates some back pressure. Heat, slight engine movement and this pressure can cause wear on the connection. Hear are some things to look for during your inspection:

  1. Clamps need to be tight, but not overly tight. The exhaust system is usually fiberglass and can easily be distorted with excess pressure.
  2. Any wear or cracking of the hump hose is a sign to get it replaced. These are not lifetime components and do have a service life.
  3. Do you have a high-water alarm? Does it work? How about your bilge pumps and automatic switches? 50 gallons a minute is going to almost always overwhelm a traditional pump system.

What else can you do? Have a dedicated engine room camera monitor to keep track of that space. The other thing is on long runs to make sure to do some engine room checks to verify that all is well. So many systems are involved in the engine room that deserve a quick look sometimes.

Why do I add this article? My friend had this happen to him this summer while going up the Washington Coast to Canada. In his case the hose from the factory was damaged during installation and failed after 20 years. Yes, lots of water and lots of soot to deal with after discovering the issue. He now does an engine room check every 30 minutes while running.

6 Boat Corrosion Myths Dispelled

Corrosion can feel like black magic, but it’s only chemistry.

Here are common misconceptions and real-world explanations for what’s really happening.

Most boats have a lot of metal aboard, so every boater needs to be concerned with corrosion. It deteriorates electrical connections, weakens fasteners, stops our electronics from working, and in worst-case scenarios, can jeopardize important below-water fittings – and we normally don’t discover the damage until the piece fails. read more Here

Coast Guard Acadamy to add more female recruits to the Coast Guard!

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy has made significant strides in increasing the number of female recruits. As of the Class of 2025, approximately 34% of the cadets are women, an improvement from previous years. The academy has been actively working to diversify its corps of cadets, with 38% of the incoming class coming from underrepresented minority groups. This commitment to diversity is reflected in the academy's efforts to welcome more women and other underrepresented groups into its ranks. The academy's initiatives include offering numerous opportunities for women, such as small class sizes, rigorous academics, and an array of competitive athletic teams. The academy's aim is to develop leaders of character who are prepared to serve their country.  With the option to get your education funded, an exciting career is also there for those interested. Be sure to consider the U.S. Coast Guard Academy when considering your options after graduating High School or for looking at continued Higher Education.

Content in your Club's Newsletters that all Boaters should read?

We can't see every club's internal communication, but we have to think some of the articles would be great information for all boaters. If you find that article of interest, please forward it to cryanews@gmail.com after getting approval to share. We can all be more informed.
