QA deadline and process update
CRPO’s Quality Assurance Program is intended to promote continuing competence and improvement. The program includes a self-assessment and professional development done in two-year cycles. The deadline for completing professional development hours has changed from November 30 to December 31. The new deadline gives registrants more time to complete their requirements and is more intuitive, as it goes by calendar year.

This coming December 31, 2021 deadline applies to RPs initially registered in previous odd-numbered years, that is, 2015, 2017, and 2019. The self-assessment can be completed through the User Management System, while the Professional Development tools are available in PDF and Word format. These tools are for your own records and should not be submitted to CRPO unless specifically requested. You can read more about the QA Program on our website.
QA Enhancement Project Webinar
As was announced in the June Communique, CRPO is revamping aspects of the Quality Assurance (QA) program. The purpose is to provide a mechanism to assist the College and registrants in assessing practice risks, to reach more registrants and tailor feedback to their needs. A new feature of the QA program will be a case-based, professionally validated online assessment.

We understand some registrants have had concerns or uncertainty about what the changes might mean, and we want to share detailed information with you, hear any concerns, and answer your questions. We will be hosting a webinar on Wednesday, September 22nd from 12pm – 1pm.

The webinar will be recorded for those who are unable to attend.
September 30 has been designated by the federal government as a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
The day was created by the Government of Canada to respond to Call #80 of the Calls to Action by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which called on Canada to, “honour survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.”

CRPO will be closed so that staff can observe this day of awareness, which is intended to be a be a step in promoting awareness and education, decreasing stigma, and addressing the harm that has been done to Indigenous people.

Through the work of further developing the College’s regulatory objectives to promote equity, diversity and inclusion in the provision of psychotherapy services, CRPO will be engaging in a consultation process with Indigenous groups and other stakeholders over the next year on how best to commemorate this day going forward.
Call for RPs With Experience in the Indigenous Practice of Psychotherapy
CRPO is looking for RPs who have training, experience or expertise in the Indigenous practice of psychotherapy and traditional healing to assist as a non-Council committee member in the review of future applications via CRPO’s Indigenous Pathway to Registration. To learn more about committee appointments, please review our website. Interested RPs should submit their resume/CV to a.fournier@crpo.ca by October 15, 2021.
Supervision Survey Results
CRPO thanks the hundreds of stakeholders who completed the clinical supervision survey. You can now view the results on our website. CRPO staff are conducting research to help inform committee and Council deliberation. Next steps in this work will include evaluating the risks and benefits of any changes that may be made to the College’s clinical supervision requirements and resources. We will hold additional consultations before specific measures are adopted or changed. Please watch for future Communiques, which will include updates on this work as well as invitation to comment on various aspects of clinical supervision and CRPO’s requirements.
Education Program Recognized
The Diplôme d'études supérieures en psychothérapie program at the Université de Hearst is the latest educational program to receive recognition from CRPO. This means that the program sufficiently enables students to develop the required competencies for entry-to-practice in psychotherapy. Visit our website for more information about the recognition process, or to review the other recognized programs.
Have you submitted clinical experience hours for review?
The CRPO website is updated regularly to indicate which month is under review. Please see the sidebar under “Processing Times” on this page.
Health information custodian successor: Follow-up survey results
In 2020 and 2021, CRPO sent the same survey to registrants. The main question was whether RPs have designated a person in writing to take custody of their clients' health records should they become unable to practise (e.g., due to disability, death or retirement). After the 2020 survey, CRPO began asking RPs, during annual registration renewal, to indicate who CRPO could contact if a client were seeking access to their records, but the registrant could not be reached. The percentage of survey respondents who have designated a successor custodian in writing grew from 44% in 2020 (73 respondents out of 167) to 64% in 2021 (74 respondents out of 115). This appears to be a positive change to help safeguard against lost or abandoned health records. For more information, refer to our FAQ on contingency planning.
