Saturday Clinics Increase Access to Vaccines in South King County

To supplement and compliment reminder and recall immunization efforts, through the WA-CHIP learning collaborative, the Federal Way Sea Mar Community Health Center held a dedicated Saturday well-child and vaccine clinic in August and will be hosting another in September. Their goal in providing access to the surrounding King County community is especially tailored towards the immigrant population.

Deadline Extended for Provider Financial Relief - Again!

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced that the deadline for applying for financial relief through the Medicaid and CHIP Provider Relief Fund portal has been extended until September 13 th. There is a new, more streamlined application form. We strongly encourage all providers who serve populations with Medicaid and CHIP to apply for these relief funds. This document answers frequently asked questions about the relief program.

Reflecting back to this time last year in 2019, active investigation of cases of EVALI (e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury) was ongoing across the United States. Now, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, youth vaping remains a relevant health issue. A recent study from Stanford shows that COVID-19 is associated with youth use of e-cigarettes as well as dual use of e-cigarettes and cigarettes.

WCAAP's legislative committee continues to work hard to improve health for ALL kids in Washington. During the interim, we have been meeting with legislators in committee members' districts, urging legislators to support pediatric practices during COVID and shining a light on the increasing challenges so many families are facing. This is also a good time for us to share some of our goals for 2021, which are outlined on our priority sheet, before the legislature is back in session. You don't have to be on the committee to help us with this work - you can easily meet with your legislators this fall by phone or via Zoom! The pandemic of COVID-19 has exposed an equally threatening, longstanding and devastating pandemic, that of racial discrimination and social injustice. Families are attending protest events, discussing the news, and having important conversations about these vital topics. Children who are witnessing events around the United States are asking questions and expressing confusion, curiosity, sadness and anxiety about what they've seen and heard. The following guidelines are offered to help parents continue to have these important conversations, provide education and explore these issues with their children in productive ways.

Paid Family & Medical Leave in Washington

Washington's state legislature passed Paid Family & Medical Leave legislation in 2017, with strong support from WCAAP. Payroll contributions began in 2019 and benefits began in January 2020. Ours is the fifth comprehensive program in the country and allows workers to take up to 12 weeks (in some cases up to 18 weeks) of paid leave to care for a new child or seriously ill family member, manage their own health concerns, or cope with a military deployment. Paid leave to bond with a new child can be taken any time in the first year after welcoming a new baby or child into your home and does not have to be taken all at once.

As pediatric providers, we have been supporting our patients through all the stressors of the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of them have had COVID-19 infection or are in fear of contracting it. Many with chronic illnesses are not showing up for follow-up visits either in-person or through telehealth. Many families are suffering economically because of unemployment or salary cuts. Everyone is under immense stress with all the physical and psychological manifestations that it brings. We often take on our patients' suffering while we ourselves are under the same stress that they are.
