Access to quality, timely health care is essential for children to grow up healthy and reach their full potential but due in part to the low rates paid by Medicaid, there are communities in our state where people covered by Apple Health for Kids can't access pediatric health care.
That's why WCAAP advocated for the state to continue the Affordable Care Act's increase of Medicaid rates to parity with Medicare when the federal increase expired in 2015, and why we continue to advocate for the state to raise the Medicaid rate to Medicare levels across the board. It has been a long process, but thanks to WCAAP members' tireless advocacy we have made great strides in educating legislators about the issue.

Building a partnership and referral system
Fostering early childhood development is critical for promoting lifelong educational success as well as physical and mental wellbeing. The High/Scope Perry Preschool Program and Abecedarian Project provided evidence that high quality early education positively nurtured childhood development and improved long-term outcomes such as high school graduation rates, lower teen pregnancy rates, higher adult earning potential, and decreased criminal activity.

New agency offers opportunities for collaboration
Washington State has a new cabinet-level agency which will be focused on the well-being of children. The Department of Children, Youth, and Family (DCYF) was signed into law by Governor Jay Inslee on July 6, 2017. The mission of DCYF is to ensure that "Washington State's children and youth grow up safe and healthy-thriving physically, emotionally, and academically, nurtured by family and community."

Improving functional outcomes for patients
The field of vascular anomalies has greatly expanded in the past few years, and management of such complex patients relies on the implementation of a multi-disciplinary approach. Vascular anomalies may be broadly classified as tumors or malformations. Malformations may then be divided further in low or high flow lesions to encompass arterial, capillary, venous, lymphatic or combined.

Questions continue to arise about the immunization of children who received some vaccines in China because of concern that surfaced a couple of years ago about improper storage and handling of vaccines, particularly in the private sector. Influenza Vaccine Advisory

The Immunization Committee of the WCAAP wishes to advise membership about Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine (LAIV, or "Flu Mist") availability this coming influenza season. For the first time in several years, LAIV will be marketed in the U.S. for the 2018-19 flu season. LAIV use was suspended in 2016, due to poor effectiveness over the three preceding flu seasons.

AAP Seeks Participants for Study about
Teen Marijuana
and Media Use
|
The AAP Julius B. Richmond Center of Excellence is seeking primary care pediatric clinicians to participate in a research study
to develop and test a primary care intervention for adolescent marijuana use. Clinicians will be trained in a screening and brief counseling intervention for marijuana or media use and asked to enroll up to 100 adolescents ages 13-18 during well or non-urgent sick visits. Teen follow-up phone surveys will be done by research staff.

HPV Vaccination: Framing the Conversation for East African Families.
