Adolescent suicide and suicidal behavior has increased significantly in the past decade and remains the second leading cause of death in adolescents. From 2007 to 2015, the suicide rate in adolescents increased by 31% nationally, from 10.8 to 14.1 per 100,000.

As opiate use disorder has increased nationwide, there has also been a rise in neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). NAS is seen in 60-80% of newborns with opiate exposure. The National Institutes of Health's National Institute on Drug Abuse cites a recent national study that showed a fivefold increase in the incidence of NAS between 2004 and 2014, from 1.5 cases per 1,000 hospital births to 8.0 cases per 1,000 hospital births. That is one baby born with NAS every 15 minutes in the United States.

Asthma Day: Interdisciplinary Care for Improved Asthma Control in Low Income and Immigrant Children

Fun - and effective - half day of education and prevention
On July 31, 2019, Public Health Seattle-King County's Eastgate clinic held its third annual Asthma Day, a clinic event focused on asthma education and preventative care. Clinic staff worked together to design a half day filled with interdisciplinary care including physician visits, spirometry, medication/inhaler teaching, and asthma education. Objectives included improving families' knowledge about asthma management and reducing asthma triggers, with a goal of improving asthma control and reducing exacerbations (and ultimately decreasing hospitalizations and emergency department visits).

Washington State School Immunization Data 2018-2019
Washington state school immunization data for the 2018-2019 school year are now available on the Department of Health's online
school immunizations dashboard. Schools in the state of Washington are required to report their students' immunization status by November of each year, and the department collects these data and makes them available to the public.

Ruth Conn, MD, FAAP describes herself as an "Army brat," living in Kansas, Virginia, New Mexico, Florida, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Hawaii, North Carolina, Washington, Germany and Okinawa. She attended Duke School of Nursing, and later received an MA in English before earning her MD at the University of Hawaii and completing her residency at Seattle Children's.
