President's Message

Happy Fall!

I want to thank everyone who attended the First National Bank, Business After Hours, on Aug 6 th ! Amazing turnout, considering what a beautiful evening it was! This coordinated with a First National Bank State Board meeting, so lots of guests visiting from all over the state, and Rotary District Governor, Andre’ Layral was also in Kodiak, making his club visits. A very fun evening!

September’s Business After Hours is at Senior Center, September 12 th ! Pat Branson, our Mayor, and also the Executive Director of the Senior Center, always throws a nice party! They have their own kitchen, so always an abundance of great food! The infamous, ‘Whippersnapper Band’ will be playing and providing music! We will have Split-the-Pot, and door prizes! The grand prize is 15,000 Alaska Airlines miles! Guaranteed to be a memorable time! Don’t miss it!

September 26 th is an Open House hosted by new Chamber Members Fusion Marine at the Chamber office conference room! This takes place during the day.Fusion Marine will be displaying their services and products and there will be food and drinks!

Later that evening, also September 26 th , we will be hosting a ribbon cutting. This is at 5:00pm, and it is at Kodiak Furniture and is hosted by the new owners!

I would like to give a shout out, and atta boy, to Aimee Williams for her, “Adjust Your Altitude”, challenge! Aimee is the Executive Director of Discover Kodiak, and also an Ex Officio Board member of the Kodiak Chamber! I do not know numbers, but I do believe over 300 people have assaulted and taken on this challenge!

A new Chamber event was held August 24 th ! “Venture-Thru-Vehicles” took place downtown on our usual Crab Fest site! It wasn’t actually Sarah’s idea, but Executive Director Sarah Phillips ran with it and made it happen. I am very proud of her efforts to put this together and make it happen! We had 33 work type vehicles that kids could climb on, sit in, blast the sirens, turn on the lights, honk the horns and just have fun with. A huge turnout! We had vehicles that you may not ever have seen, like the high tech air port maintenance equipment, police and fire dept rigs, and the brand new Sherp! Sherp is one of our newer Chamber members and that is quite a rig!! This was an awesome, and loud event, and safe to say, should happen on an annual basis! We all had fun!!

Make plans to attend the annual Chamber Dinner October 19 th ! It will be on us before we know it!

Lots going on, as usual!

Sincerely,

Lindsay Knight

First Annual Venture-Thru-Vehicles
Saturday the 24th saw the First Annual Venture-Thru-Vehicles. With 33 vehicles in attendance and a beautiful sunny day over 1,500 people toured the working vehicles of Kodiak.

The biggest hits of the day were the bounce houses, donated and managed by Grand Slam Toys and Games, the Coast Guard helicopter landing on the spit, visits from Kalsin (the Discover Kodiak bear) and Patty (the Chamber Crab Fest Crab),

A big thanks to all companies that donated their time and a vehicle to tour, Venture-Thru-Vehicles simply wouldn't have been possible without you!

Productive Procrastination:

Archana Murthy | An End to Procrastination

Humans are all united by a force greater than joy, sorrow, and love... procrastination. Contrary to the humorous picture our popular culture paints, avoidance of work is a serious issue. Surveys suggest that 85-95% of students encounter problems directly related to procrastination. As a teenager, all-too-familiar with this torrid cycle of stress, anxiety, and depression, Archana Murthy presents an insightful cure to one of society’s greatest ills. Through personal reflection, Archana suggests that the cure to procrastination is a springboard for a greater journey that is better navigated with others.

Archana Murthy is a student of Marcus High School but also of life. She learns Indian classical music and dance but loves any and all art. She believes that art, science, and spirituality are often interchangeable. This is her first TEDx talk
