The History of Hammontree and Morris Knowles

The History of Hammontree & Associates, Limited
Hammontree began as a full-time consulting engineering firm on July 1, 1966. From 1962 to 1964 and from 1964 to July 1, 1966, R. James Hammontree was practicing part time with partner Lawrence McGlinchy, P.E., P.S., in Cleveland, then with Edward Friedl, P.S., in North Canton, respectively.

On July 1, 1966, R. James Hammontree and Edward Friedl paid the estate of the deceased Robert V. Muckley, P.E. P.S., for the ownership of Robert V. Muckley, Consulting Engineering firm of Canton, Ohio. The Muckley firm was established in 1948. The newly acquired firm was a partnership named Hammontree-Friedl and Associates. It was sixty percent owned by R. James Hammontree and forty percent owned by Edward Friedl. The firm rented an office on Freedom Avenue in the North Canton Industrial Park before building a new office on Freedom Avenue.

On October 15, 1971, Hammontree and Friedl split the partnership and R. James Hammontree started Hammontree and Associates, Limited, in North Canton, Ohio. From 1971 to 1974 Hammontree and Associates rented a building on Main Street in North Canton until the building at the firm’s present headquarters, at 5233 Stoneham Road was complete.

The History of Morris Knowles & Associates, Inc.,
A Hammontree Company

Morris Knowles & Associates, Inc. (MKA) was established in 1916 by Mr. Morris Knowles and under his direction the firm completed a number of significant projects in several major cities that would later be credited for helping to eliminate water borne diseases, such as dysentery. These projects included the formation of the Massachusetts Metropolitan Water Board and the development of the Wachusett Reservoir and Aqueduct to supply Boston and twenty-eight (28) surrounding cities with clean water; continuous additions to the slow sand filter plant in Lawrence, Massachusetts; a new gravity water supply for the city of Philadelphia; and the creation of laboratories and experimental filters for the city of Pittsburgh leading to the construction of slow sand filters on the Allegheny River at Aspinwall.

Mr. Knowles continued to expand his outstanding effort to the community until the time of his death at his home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on November 10, 1932, leaving behind him a legacy of commitment to providing clean healthy water to all.

Morris Knowles & Associates, Inc. (MKA) continued offering engineering services and was later purchased by Hammontree & Associates in 1980 which allowed the firm to further expand its engineering services. Today, Morris Knowles & Associates, Inc. provides civil engineering and surveying to many clients in the U.S. including Pennsylvania, Ohio, Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Alabama.
