Esa Vesterbacka – Retirement after 14 years as
Head of Criminal Sanctions Agency Finland
Esa Vesterbacka, who was the head of the Criminal Sanctions Agency of Finland for 14 years retired on the 1 September 2019. He worked in the prison and probation services in various positions for 32 years and his long and eminent career focused on the development of the Finnish correctional system and criminal policy.

Palliative Care for Prisoners

A Task Force has been established by the European Association of Palliative Care (EAPC) to investigate the provision of palliative care for prisoners in Europe. In this article, Dr. Mary Turner, Reader in Health Services Research at the University of Huddersfield and Co-chair of the Task Force, describes the project that she and her colleagues are undertaking, and reports on a recently completed survey to map palliative care provision in eight countries.

Real Estate Workshop -
Registration Open!
From 14-16 October the first EuroPris Real Estate workshop will take place in Ljubljana . The Slovenian Prison Service will host this full two-day event. The programme’ s focus is on design for rehabilitation; it also includes amongst others design for women, age appropriate solutions, human prisons as well as modern methods of construction. The workshop is open for European public sector, academics and ngo’s.

Interagency Cooperation Workshop – Registration Open!
EuroPris organizes in cooperation with the Confederation of European Probation from 12 - 13 November the Interagency Cooperation workshop at the Centre for Legal Studies in Barcelona . The workshop addresses cooperation between prisons, probation and municipalities when preparing offenders for their return to society. Special attention will be given to specific groups of offenders and to good cooperation models in amongst others Germany, Netherlands and Catalonia.

Correctional Research Symposium – Call for papers / Save the date
The 3rd International Correctional Research Symposium will be organized by EuroPris, ICPA and CEP in the week of 11th May 2020 and hosted by the Portuguese Reintegration and Prison Service in Porto . Under the title Motivation and Well-being of correctional staff: ‘How they matter and what we can do about it?’ a call for papers will be launched soon.

Summer course – Criminal Justice in a Polarised Society
At the Criminal Justice Platform Summer course, taking place in Barcelona and hosted by the Center for Legal Cooperation, 51 participants from 20 countries participated. Managing VEO in prison, Social inclusion and Transforming conflict were the topics of the three parallel courses.

Dancing Behind Bars – European Dance Challenge
In the spring of 2018, the Finnish Vanaja prison launches the ‘European Prison Dance Challenge’. With a choreography that is created, performed and filmed in the vicinity of the prison grounds. Non-profit organisation De Rode Antraciet from Belgium accepted the challenge and engaged the international dance company Ultima Vez. Choreographer Seppe Baeyens translated the challenge into a dance project with prisoners from three Flemish and one Brussels based prison. As a result, a dance movie in which 24 prisoners (re)discover their femininity on the soundtrack of Nilufer Yanya’s  The Florist .
