Researcher Spotlight: Meet Ashley Kubley of DAAP
Art. Culture. Textiles. Apparel. They're Ashley Kubley's passions.
The assistant professor in fashion design is also head of the Evelyn G. Burgoyne Fashion Technology Center. Her research centers on bridging the tried and true methods of old with today's technologies.
For several years now, she has been working on a project in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico.
Last year, with the help of a 2018 University Research Council grant, Kubley was able to co-create a workshop there aimed at keeping a traditional method of weaving alive in the region, with a contemporary twist.
The training program paid five local master artisans to train young women how to create the textiles using fibers endemic to the region. They also learned about how to create a viable product and bring it to market.
In the photo above, master artisan Doña Maria Reyes Maas Cab talks to apprentice Wendy Dzul Can about a fiber used to make bags and other woven products.
And keep an eye out for the announcement coming soon for this year's available URC grants.
