MATHER VETERANS VILLAGE
A Place to Call Home

On August 31st, Mercy Housing, Veterans Resource Centers of America (VRC), the City of Rancho Cordova and the County of Sacramento announced the opening of Mather Veterans Village, the first permanent supportive housing for homeless and disabled veterans in the Sacramento region. After breaking ground in late 2014, Phase I of the project is complete and all 50 homes are occupied by veterans and their families. Mather Veterans Village is the first of three phases of critically needed veterans housing and supportive services in the region.

The new, three-story, garden-style community -- designed by Mogavero Architects, a local Sacramento firm -- includes 50 apartment homes, as well as 3,500 square feet of meeting rooms, staff offices, kitchen/lounge area, and a computer lab. In addition to exceeding California's energy and water usage standards, the site includes landscaping irrigated by 100% onsite gray water, solar electric generation for tenant net metering, and a solar hot water system.

NEW HELMETS FOR LANCER FOOTBALL TEAM

Head injury and concussions are a great concern among parents, leagues, and schools - especially at the youth and high school levels. Thanks to a Community Enhancement Fund grant from the City of Rancho Cordova, both the varsity and junior varsity football teams at Cordova High School will be wearing high-tech helmet technology that keeps them safer.

103 student-athletes will be we aring helmet-based head impact monitoring technology that is designed to alert coaches and trainers when significant impacts are sustained on the field. The technology from Riddell measures head impact severity, and when an impact exceeds a predetermined threshold, an alert is transmitted to the sideline staff who can then examine the player for symptoms of a concussion. Riddell believes the City of Rancho Cordova is the first city in the nation to fund the cost of this helmet technology to keeps its students safer. Go Big Red!

PRO Youth & Families is a local youth organization that is inspiring, educating and mobilizing young people to build healthy futures for themselves, their families and their communities. The organization started two youth programs in Rancho Cordova, thanks to a grant from the City's Community Enhancement Fund. These programs provide opportunities for young Rancho Cordovans to grow through initiatives that engage youth around advocacy and civic engagement. The Youth Leadership Academy, as part of this program, wanted to give back to the Rancho Cordova community. The youth leaders have a passion for pets and will be participating in the Doggie Day in the Park by giving out adoption information and other goodies for your furry friends. Stop by and say hello!

Also at Doggie Day in the Park is the chance to enjoy the newly renovated Hagan Community Dog Park! Leadership Rancho Cordova Class X invites you to join them at a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. at the dog park to check out the new amenities. Feel free to bring Fido and enjoy the festivities!

2016 STREET REHABILITATION PROJECT

The 2016 Street Rehabilitation Project in the Cordova Towne and White Rock Neighborhoods is in full swing! This project will provide newly paved roads, easier-to-walk sidewalks, and better drainage.

The contractor has started the final phase of paving work that includes grinding the streets and paving them with asphalt. The project completion is anticipated for the end of September.

We appreciate your patience as we finalize the work. If you have any questions, please contact the City's Public Works Department at (916) 851-8710.

The City of Rancho Cordova's Storm Water Quality Program aims to reduce pollution in creeks and the American River. One way the City works to meet this goal is by educating and conducting enforcement on polluters. If you observe any occurrences of illicit discharges into a storm drain or creek, or are unsure of something that you see, please call (916) 851-8710.

Common issues we see in our waterways are:
  • Spills of transmission fluids
  • Draining of chlorinated pool water
  • Dumping of trash or leaves into a drain
  • Landscaping materials washed into a drain
    • If you are working on your front yard, consider placing a tarp underneath piles of dirt or other landscaping materials. Debris can clog the drain and cause flooding when it rains.
If  you have any questions about these and other services provided by the City's Storm Water Quality Program, please contact Dana Grossi at (916) 851-8897.
