Lifeline Employee Testimonial

This case came to me originally from Indianapolis, where the girl and her brother were from. Both children were placed in foster care in Fort Wayne. They had abusive parents; their mother died when both were young, and their father’s abuse grew worse. Once they were removed from the home, they were never returned. I obtained a referral for sibling visits in August of 2021. The children were not placed together, and their father died in October 2021, so they had so many questions about what that meant for their futures. At this time, they were 16 and 13. One of the girl’s teachers grew close to her and offered to adopt her, even though she had never been fostered before. The hope was for this teacher to adopt both children in the end if possible. My referral ended sort of abruptly in March 2022 when the plan was for this said adoption, and visits no longer needed to be supervised by me.

Then in October 2022, I learned that the plan for adoption had fallen through, and the girl had yet again been moved around the system. In late November 2022, I was put back on to this young girl's case. I was excited to work with her again and surprised at the growth she had been through already in such a short time. Around this time, her DCS plan changed to APPLA (or “aging out”), and she got a new FCM and team to support her. Later, at the top of this year, I helped her get placed in a foster home that, probably for the first time in her life, is enriching her. All of this is to say that at the beginning of June, I was able to attend her graduation ceremony from High School. This young woman has been accepted into Ball State University to study Marine Biology and has big plans for her future. In the future, she also plans to take on caring for her brother after college potentially. It will be bittersweet when I have to close this referral come the fall school year, but I am so proud of her growth and potential.
