Huntsville, Ala. — September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, and the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library (HMCPL) is encouraging residents to get a library card and take advantage of the many free resources and services available through the library.
A library card provides access to books, movies, audiobooks, music, instruments, interlibrary loans, adventure backpacks and digital resources at HMCPL’s 10 locations. Cardholders can also use online resources such as Ancestry, BrainHQ, the Huntsville Times Historical Archive, driving test resources, resume-building tools, teacher resources and grant resources.
Over the past year, 18,720 people signed up for HMCPL library cards, including 3,654 children and 15,066 adults.
“Your library card gives you access to so much more than books,” said Connie Chow, HMCPL Executive Director. “It puts free resources, information and opportunities into the hands of people throughout our community. Whether you want to read, learn a new skill, research your family history or try something new, there is a lot to discover at the library.”
Library cards can also help families save money. HMCPL patrons save an average of about $900 per year and borrow an average of 35 items. Some of the library’s most avid users borrow around 2,000 items a year, saving an average of $50,000.
In addition to borrowing materials, cardholders can access Makerspaces and 3D printing, participate in workforce development classes and community groups, and take advantage of other programs and services.
Getting a library card is easy. Residents can visit any HMCPL location or sign up through the library’s website. A valid ID and proof of residence are required, and library staff are available to help with the process. Visit hmcpl.org/getting-started
This September, HMCPL encourages residents who do not have a library card to sign up and current cardholders to explore a new resource or service.
