The Landings Art Association invites you to come to the LAA/Sound View Gallery at the Palmetto Club throughout the month of September to see the latest magnificent woodturning creations of Artist of the Month, Doug McCulloch. Although our monthly opening receptions are on hold for now, LAA artists are still hard at work, and you won’t want to miss the new collection hanging in the Palmetto Club Gallery.
Doug McCulloch has always loved working with his hands, using tools of all sorts to make and fix things. As a fulltime software engineer and software developer, however, woodworking was relegated to a hobby. Before retiring from the corporate world, Doug began looking for a creative outlet involving wood and found woodturning.
Doug has been turning now for 12 years using both domestic and imported hard woods. A great deal of his wood comes from salvaged sources (saved from the wood chipper) here in Georgia. He tends to start pieces using recently cut logs which take longer to complete because after shaping and hollowing a piece, it must dry slowly for up to 12 months before putting it back on the lathe for finishing.
Like many things in life, it’s easy to learn the basics of woodturning, but it takes a lifetime to master. According to Doug, “One of the reasons I love woodturning is the infinite variety of pieces that are possible, and the challenge of maximizing the artistic potential of a given piece of wood or log.” Doug is currently exploring color and complementary materials (resin, metal, paint, minerals, etc.) and carving / burning in his art which has greatly expanded the breadth and interest of his work.
Doug has several juried awards to his credit, including a “Best in Show” at the 2012 Arts Clayton Juried Art Show. He has also been represented by the Signature Gallery in Savannah, the Mountain Mist Gallery in Cashiers, NC and the 2 Rules Gallery in Marietta, GA. Doug is a member of the American Association of Woodturners, the Lowcountry Woodturners here in Savannah, and The Landings Art Association.
