ASF is still going strong with no signs of slowing down. Reports show that hog numbers are down 32% in China. It will be interesting to see how many things this will continue to effect this year and years to come.
China’s Hog Inventory Falls
32% in July
Country makes another U.S. pork purchase after canceling purchase at end of July.
Krissa Welshans | Aug 16, 2019

China’s Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Affairs (MARA) reported Aug. 16 that its hog inventory levels fell 32.2% in July compared to July 2018 as the result of the continued spread of African swine fever (ASF). A survey of hog farms in 400 counties also showed the sow inventory declined by 31.9% in July, the agency said. Both numbers showed a significant decline even from the June data and revealed total hog inventory down 25.8% and sow numbers down 26.7%.

"This is a call to leaders in food, finance and science to be part of the solution to co-create sustainable food systems with U.S. farmers and ranchers," Fitzgerald said. "We're starting with climate change and how we can pull down carbon on our farms. Our hope is that, one day soon, we can be the first sector in our country that is carbon neutral and, over time, helping offset for other sectors."

Transportation Industry Update: Freight continues to be a large factor in feed ingredient cost. Currently, freight costs are low. Low margins have caused several large trucking companies to go out of business this year. Recent articles tell of stranded truckers unable to use company gas cards to drive home. With hurricane season in full force this week, the seemingly annual fall trucking availability concerns are starting. The article below brings up the concern that electric vehicles use roads but pay no road improvement or maintenance tax like petroleum users do.
Electric Vehicles

State Governments are starting to realize that as electric vehicle numbers rise, gasoline road tax funds decline.   Which leaves the question, how can we tax electric vehicle owners for upkeep of the roads they use? There are currently 20 states that have an additional registration fee for electric and hybrid vehicles to help cover the gap in declining gas tax revenue. Minnesota is a $75 yearly fee, on the lower end of the other states' fees, the maximum being $200.
