September New Releases
There are so many great titles coming in to the shop this Fall. As the weather starts to cool down, you might be looking for the perfect new book to curl up with. We've compiled a list of some of our staff favorites and other exciting titles to look forward to! Keep scrolling for store news and upcoming events!
If I Survive You by Jonathan Escoffery
A sort of blend in form of short-stories that, when compiled, become a novel. The book focuses on a family who immigrated from Kingston, Jamaica to Miami and the struggles of identity that followed for their children. I loved this book and all of its characters. I found it just incredibly moving.

The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell
O'Farrell's "Hamnet" was a runaway bestseller in Ballard and we are so excited for her new book coming September 6th - another historical novel set in Florence in 1550.

Available September 6th
Bliss Montage by Ling Ma
The author of "Severance" is back with a brilliant book of short stories - my favorite being a dreamlike (nightmarish?) story about a woman living in a mansion with her 100 ex-boyfriends...and her husband. Scathing and hilarious and unforgettable. Ling Ma is a massive talent.

Prisoners of the Castle by Ben MacIntyre
Ben Macintyre, historian, and author of The Spy and the Traitor, tackles one of the most famous prison stories of all time. The perfect gift for the WWII historian in your life.

Available September 13th
Less is Lost by Andrew Sean Greer
The beloved Arthur Less from Andrew Sean Greer’s 2018 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Less is back! He will charm you in his enduring humorous ways as he travels cross country to author related events in the U.S. To quote Less quoting Meriwether Lewis, “I should be extremely happy in your company.” It is a delightful journey of laugh out loud moments sprinkled between witty observations. There is a reason we have sold nearly 400 copies of Less, we hope you all come back for more. Totally worth the ride.

Leech by Hiron Ennes
This book has one of the most fascinating narrators I've ever read: a multi-conscious, all-knowing parasite posing as the world's doctors in order to keep its human hosts alive. One such doctor is sent to an old chateau to care for the ills of a decrepit local despot and his family. This post-post-apocalyptic novel is a ton of fun with plenty of creepy body horror.

Self-Made Boys by Anna-Marie McLemore
A "Gatsby Remix" for Young-Adult readers. You might think you know this story already, but I can assure you that this retelling is an enticing, intersectional crown jewel that just might, for me, surpass the original. McLemore has long been a master of writing atmosphere and longing, and this quality really shines in Self-Made Boys.

The Vanquishers by Kalynn Bayron
Vampires were wiped out twenty years ago in the Reaping...or were they? Readers ages 8-12 (who aren't afraid of monsters or the dark) will LOVE this hilarious and spooky story of four kids navigating a terrifying world - many of the book's themes reminded me of life during lockdown.

Recommended by Becky for readers ages 8-12.
Available September 20th
Farmhouse by Sophie Blackall
Store favorite, Sophie Blackall, is back with a gorgeous new picture book. This one has the feel of a classic and we won't be a bit surprised if it ends up winning all the awards. The perfect gift for any occasion. We'll have a big stack at the shop!
