Greetings!
Welcome to September! Probably one of the most beautiful months in Central Oregon, with leaves changing colors and rabbit brush in bloom. We're certainly looking forward to watching the beauty unfold, but these are also scary times that we're living in. Afghanistan, Hurricane Ida, and Covid-19 are all looming. It's easy to get overwhelmed, but recently I was reminded that back when things seemed bleak in 1969, it was only months later a man walked on the moon. Keep the Faith!
On First Friday, September 3rd, “Nature's Splendor”, will open at Mockingbird Gallery, from 5-8pm. This is a two-person show featuring, Dan Chen and Troy Collins. Rich Hurdle will perform and Troy and Dan will be in attendance to talk about their process and answer any questions you might have. This show will remain hanging throughout September.
We hope you will check out our "Upcoming Events", located down below as well as our "New Arrival" section!
We hope you enjoy staying in touch through our September newsletter, and, as always, we love & appreciate all your feedback.
Sincerely,
Nathalie & Jim Peterson and

Dan Chen was born in China in the 1960’s. His love affair with art began at age three while watching his father paint. In 1983 at age 20, he immigrated to San Francisco with his parents and two years later enrolled in San Francisco’s Academy of Art College. He currently lives and works out of the Pacific Northwest in Eugene, Oregon with his family. Moving to the Pacific Northwest from San Francisco engendered in Dan a love of wildlife, and he depicts the creatures in his beautiful bronzes. He uses a wax- or oil-based sculpting medium depending on the size and complexity of the subject. He uses the “lost wax” method in casting in combination with a method that uses a fine ceramic shell to ensure the finest detail. After casting he will re-sculpt any imperfections to the original texture, and he does his own patinas applying various chemicals to give the pieces the desired color and texture.

The solid foundation in many art forms such as oil painting, watercolor, pastel pencil, soft pastel, charcoal drawing, slip-cast ceramics, porcelain, raku pottery, stoneware, and bronze has allowed Dan to perfect his own particular methods. His experience with the eastern and western disciplines of art has provided the inspiration for the extremely pleasing and dramatic style he has developed.

Chen says, “In the last twenty some years of my life, as I walked through my journey in art, it seems as though there was always someone there to teach, to guide, to share or to encourage me. I am grateful to all those people who have been in my life.” Because Dan is a modest man, when asked if he wanted to be known as a painter, ceramicist, or sculptor, he simply said - “artist.”

As a nationally-renowned western landscape impressionist, Troy Collins creates paintings with brilliant color, texture and insight from his studio nestled in the middle of the Bitterroot Mountain Range. His paintings have graced the halls of the California State Capitol, the Pentagon, the U.S. Capital, and are included in many corporate and private collections throughout the United States and Europe. Troy’s work has been featured in over 75 magazines and four books and he has also been chosen as one of the top 25 quick finish artists in the West. Troy is a proud member of the C.M. Russell Museum’s Russell Skull Society of Artists. As a protégé of master landscape painter Robert Moore, Troy Collins developed a passion for creating a “complete visual experience,” one that connects the viewer with the subject through color, texture and design. Troy credits Robert Moore with inspiring his love of Russian Impressionism whose scenes of everyday life resonate with pure color and shimmering light. He also gained tremendous insight by working alongside other talented painters, especially Barry Thomas and Patrick Matthews.

A native of Montana, Troy enjoyed a real Montana childhood, living and playing in high-mountain valleys and wild rivers. His love of the rugged outdoors, exploring and enjoying the backcountry wilderness, is where he finds inspiration and renewed motivation transferring the boundless beauty of nature’s glorious color and light onto canvas. Troy is an avid plein air painter and many of his pieces are completed on site.

“I’ve always found inspiration and spiritual rejuvenation in the wilderness, and translating my experience of nature into artistic creation has been the focus of my adult life. Painting is a spiritual process for me. I pour my heart into each composition as a celebration of the miracle of creation. My goal is to move the viewer to experience a flood of powerful emotions, to feel the energy that flows throughout me as I put brush to canvas.”
