"A Gentleman in Moscow" brings us to 1922 Russia and the magnificent Metropol Hotel. Count Alexander Rostov is sentenced by Bolshevik tribunal to house arrest in this luxury hotel, which is only a short distance from the Kremlin. Threatened with death if he leaves, the distinguished gentleman also is forced to move from his palatial suite to cramped servants quarters, and surrender most of his belongings "to the people." He tries to make the best of his adverse circumstances with humor and empathy. Readers are introduced to a gorgeous Russian setting, Towles' colorful characters, and his fantastic writing style, called "gorgeous sleight of hand" by the New York Times.
