September News

Greetings,

We are excited to announce that our free Evening Seminar series starts tomorrow, September 3rd in Harlem! Keep reading for a list of upcoming seminars.

TWN collaborates with a vibrant community of more than 400 filmmakers, distributing their media works at universities and public events across the globe. Barbara McCullough’s groundbreaking video, "Shopping Bag Spirits and Freeway Fetishes," is set to screen at the National Gallery of Art during the "Photography and the Black Arts Movement, 1955–1985" exhibit. Jamika Ajalon, creator of "Locations of the M/othership," is currently artist-in-residence at Wave Farm, where she is crafting a new radio broadcast, "Fluid Code Transmissions: Liberation Cypher." Pam Sporn, another social justice filmmaker with TWN, will showcase "Cuban Roots/Bronx Stories" at the centennial celebration of Harlem’s Schomburg Center. Meanwhile, Kathryn Ramey’s latest work, "EL SIGNO VACIO (the empty sign)," has earned the prestigious Richard Werbner Award for Visual Ethnography at the RAI Film Festival.

In other news, the New York Latino Film Festival (NYLFF) is celebrating its 25th anniversary from September 13-21. With a core mission to cultivate audiences for Latino cinema, bolster the film community, and facilitate collaborations within the entertainment industry, NYLFF has become a beacon for Latino creatives across various media. TWN is the proud fiscal sponsor of the NYLFF.

Lastly, we have a special request from our friends at Black Public Media (BPM), funders of essential documentaries like "Mama Gloria", "Razing Liberty Square", and "Max Roach." Recently, the U.S. Congress voted to eliminate over $1.1 billion in funding for public media, cutting $1.8 million from Black Public Media’s budget. This threatens the future of Black stories, independent filmmaking, and accessible storytelling that reflects the richness of cinema in the United States. Now is the time to support BPM and fuel the future of Black stories. Once you donate, you will get limited-time access to exclusive BPM-funded films throughout the campaign.
