President's Note

Hello my dear friends,

I would like to thank all the volunteers that have helped the gallery in many ways to keep our doors open to the public and to allow more exposure to the artists' artwork. The gallery is doing well because of our volunteer and member support! We thank you so much!

Well, our theme art show, " Art of the Animals" is over. We sold a total of five paintings and many gift cards. The Ahimsa Haven Animal Rescue raffle table did very well. Next month we will announce how much we raised through the fundraiser for the animal shelter.

We have taken some of the animal artwork over to Templeton's Senior Center to hang in their hallways for the month of September. We hope to sell more paintings there to help both the artists and the animal rescue. If you missed the animal art show, you will be able to see some of the art at the senior center.

Our next group theme show, " LOST & FOUND," will be our September show. This will be a very interesting show that you shouldn't miss. Read more below and we hope to see you at the reception.
LOST & FOUND Reception this Friday!!!

We are doing another " Small Works" affordable art show for the months of November and December. It's time for you to start working on this show. Keep in mind that it is affordable artwork that is smaller than 12 inches and less than $100.

We are asking you to make well crafted Christmas tree ornaments to sell during our Small Works art show.

Mark your calendars: GALA's Annual Spring Show will be on the weekend of APRIL 24 - 26, 2020.

Put the En Plein Air at the Farmstead in Phillipston on your calendar. It looks like a beautiful spot to explore and paint.

Don't forget that we have art critiques going on-the next one is Saturday, September 21st.

Sincerely,

Deb Giordano

Four shows. One night.
ArtsWorcester, Worcester, MA

Opening September 6
Four shows. One night.
Fall starts with a bang

Material Needs 2019 /// Robin Reynolds: Summer Blooms/Winter Gardens /// Nastasia Lawton-Sticklor: Tea Time /// Sarah Williams: Dysfunctional

Members & supporters preview: Friday, September 6, 5:00 - 6:00 PM
Public reception: Friday, September 6, 6:00 - 9:00 PM

Four shows. Thirteen artists. One incredible night jam-packed with opening celebrations! Help us kick off our fall exhibition season as we present to you four exciting exhibitions in our galleries.

Now in its eighth iteration, Material Needs 2019 showcases eleven talented artists in the West Gallery: Tess Barbato, Amanda Bastien, Aimee Cotnoir, Melinda Goodhue, Teresa Lamacchia, Piya Samant, Lyn Slade, Jaimee Taborda, Cathy Taylor, Tyler Vance, and Sarah Williams. Artists were selected to receive Material Needs Grants in 2018, and now go on to display the work they created with these funds a year and a half later. Grants are available to artists living in Worcester County, who have been ArtsWorcester members for at least one year. From encaustics to felting to sculpture, the work on view illustrates how local artists are served by this rare opportunity.

In the East Gallery, Robin Reynolds' large-scale, richly colored floral paintings are a shamelessly gorgeous innovation in the traditional genre of New England plein air painting. Summer Blooms/Winter Gardens will showcase Reynolds as an accomplished artist, simultaneously capable of experienced, confident work, and taking on new approaches and new media mid-career.

Upstairs at ArtsWorcester at the Davis Art Gallery, two solo exhibitions transform the space through contrasting media with a philosophical connection. Nastasia Lawton-Sticklor explores cultural narratives through photography in Tea Time. In Dysfunctional, Sarah Williams uses sculpture to parse language and politics, employing unusual techniques. Both artists explore perception and adversity through visual symbolism.

These exhibitions will be on view in our galleries through October 5. Gallery hours will run Tuesdays through Thursdays, 12:00 to 5:00 PM, and Fridays through Saturdays, 12:00 to 7:00 PM, and are free to all.

Mapping the Body
Nina's Nook, Turners Falls, MA

Nancy Lautenbach is exhibiting "mapping the body: a mixed media exploration of the female form" at Nina's Nook during September/October. The installation includes sculptural surprises as well as wall art. Her Pod Series of drawings and collage features a feminine, organic form that "eludes to secrets, body, sexuality, shame, woundedness, containment, fear, and the intimacy of being,"says Lautenbach Her 365 Series also features this pod form, with collage, text, and drawings, that emerged during Lautenbach's third year of daily art practice. "In whatever medium I choose, the pod appears, staking claim to the landscape of the female experience," says Lautenbach. "Through line I explore the contours and curves of the body and the movement of her inherent energy."

Mapping the body opens on September 12 and runs through October 26. Join the artist for a reception at the gallery on Saturday, September 14, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Info: ninasnook.com, 413.834.8800. Through August 31.

Upcoming 2019 Workshops
Monadnock Area Artists Association, Keene, NH

November 2 & 3 - Lisa Ober - Realistic Still Life
The Early Bird special is extended until October 1st

Artist Lisa Ober, PSA, will teach a color-filled workshop on how to create beautifully detailed still life paintings in pastel. Lisa will take a step-by-step approach through her unique still life technique, from the first sketch to the finished piece using a photo reference (provided). Short demonstrations followed by plenty of class work time will ignite a passion for still life painting as students see their colorful paintings take shape. Participants will learn the skills needed to create believable and realistic still life paintings that are loaded with impressive details. Lisa will discuss developing keen observation skills, color selection, pastel application, and she will disclose her secrets for handling difficult surfaces such as glass or metal-giving special attention to this area.

Students will get plenty of personal attention, and Lisa's enthusiasm for still life painting is as contagious for the beginner as it is for the experienced painter. Regardless of favorite subject matter, students will leave with some hot tips for making their future paintings stand out in a crowd. If those in the class aren't already in love with still life painting, they will be by the end of this one!

Keene Pumpkin Festival
Keene, NH

Artists invited to carve and exhibit at Keene Pumpkin Festival in the HeART of Downtown Keene

Keene Pumpkin Festival is in its third year rekindled as a display of the region's creativity for all to enjoy on Central Square in Downtown Keene. Of the 5,000 jack-o'-lanterns displayed on Sunday, October 27, 2019, thousands will be carved by children in area schools. But there is space for several hundred additional works of pumpkin art and organizers would like to invite MAAA and all area artists to consider carving. The admiration and "ooohs and ahhhs" of onlookers is gratifying and adds to the excitement of the day.

Anyone interested in displaying an artistic pumpkin, or even carving at the festival as a demonstration, please contact Tim Zinn ([email protected]) or [email protected]. The photo here was taken in 2018 by Shaundi Brown. Artist unknown. More photos at PumpkinFestival.org

ReVamp Fashion Show
(Part of FAB Fashion Passion)
Saturday, September 22, 2019 in Turners Falls, MA
Contact: Rachel Teumim
[email protected]

ReVamp will be an upcycled fashion show as part of FAB Fashion Passion 2019 September 21-22nd in Turners Falls, MA.  We are searching for pieces made from recycled clothing or other materials.

Fashion is an opportunity for creative expression and a place to play with identity and gender, art and functionality, confidence and style.  ReVamp is about taking something that had a previous life and turning it into fashion to add layers of creativity, meaning and whimsy. Creative interpretation of the fashion show framework is encouraged.

Take what's there and reimagine it; start cutting, stapling, sewing, gluing, even if you're not sure what will happen.  Find clothing or objects that pose a challenge- that have no other destiny than the landfill or the rag bin-and turn them into something beautiful!  Or at least, something wearable.

Creativity and follow-through are key requirements, previous experience is not. Stay tuned for workshops. Contact Rachel Teumim for more information: [email protected]

Wachusett Brewing Company Call for Artists
Wachusett Brewing Company, Westminster, MA

Wachusett Brewery is turning 25 years old this September! We are hosting a day long festival to celebrate and would love to involve some local artists. Here are the details of the event and what we are looking for:

When: September 14th, 2019
Where: Wachusett Brew Yard, 175 State Road East
Westminster, MA 01473

The Concept:
We are looking for artists to work with us to create pieces that are unique to the Wachusett Brewery Brand. This means they could use Wachusett cans, kegs or bottles. The pieces could also be made from other mediums somehow inspired by what we do at Wachusett Brewery. We are looking for things that our guests will be amazed by as they attend the concert! We would love for some of the pieces to be interactive as well as being very picture friendly.

We are also trying to get a large sculpture spelling out "Wachusett" made out of Wachusett cans, kegs or bottles created for the event as well.

Please feel free to email with any questions regarding this project. I would love to expand more upon what we need over the phone or in person with any artists who believe they may be interested!

Theme Based Exhibit/Sales Opportunity - Hey Day
Princeton Arts Society, Princeton, MA

The Princeton Arts Society invites artists to participate in a special art event at this fall's September 14th Hey Day event at the Mass Audubon Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuary.

Theme: "Butterflies, Bees, Beetles, and All Other Members of the Class Insecta"

Insects represent sixty percent of all the species on earth. It is estimated that there are 30 million species of insects. Insects play an important role in biodiversity. In fact, our very lives depend on insects. Many insects are at risk and face extinction. So let us give them some recognition!

Exhibit Description: Artists are invited to submit new or previously created original work of art on the insect of their choice. Insects needs to be the primary subject in all art work.  There is no media restriction and artists are encouraged to think creatively and perhaps choose an insect that does not often end up in a painting. In place of an original that you may have created and sold in the past, a fine arts reproduction of a work of art that is consistent with the theme can be submitted.

Two dimensional artists are encouraged to mat and frame their originals and have them wired and ready for hanging, however, oils and acrylics can be submitted unframed and watercolors, pastels, and other flat surface media (such as photography) can be matted and shrink wrapped and ready for presentation. Members who work in three dimensional media along with those who create jewelry or crafts of any kind are invited to submit work with insect motifs or designs. Artists may submit multiple works of art.

Participation Information: Artists who would like to submit work are asked to let the exhibit coordinator know of their intent to participate as soon as possible, but no later than September 7. Artists do not need to be present for the event. The exhibit coordinator will provide further details to all participants.

Sales/Donations: There is no entry fee, however, as this is a fund raising event. Artists with work sold during the exhibit will be asked to donate 15% of any sales. Donations will be shared with the Wachusett Meadow Sanctuary and the Princeton Arts Society.

Questions can be directed to Len Haug at [email protected].
