September

Lucy Maud Montgomeryy

Lo! a ripe sheaf of many golden days

Gleaned by the year in autumn’s harvest ways,

With here and there, blood-tinted as an ember,

Some crimson poppy of a late delight

Atoning in its splendor for the flight

Of summer blooms and joys

This is September.

Our version of Sweet Bird from the upcoming Both Sides of Joni release.  All these vain promises on beauty jars

The wheels of time will be turning and power, ideals, and beauty will fade.

However, Joni Mitchell's words are timeless and powerful - it was an unforgettable experience to reflect on and reimagine her music together with vocalist Janiece Jaffe and a stellar band. We are ready to share the recordings with the world but need help with the mastering, design, and distribution costs. Consider pre-ordering through our Kickstarter campaign by October 2 - here is the link - and share widely. Kickstarter works on an all or nothing basis - every contribution helps. Thank you!

Dear Friends

It's official - I am the Professor for Artistic Research at the Jam Music Lab University in Vienna for the upcoming school year while on leave from Indiana University! My task will be to plan and build the Institute for Artistic Research in Jazz and Popular Music through projects, programs, publications, and conferences. I will be in Vienna from October 4 to December 12 this Fall and would love to make music with new friends around Austria - email me for project ideas and gigs. Indiana friends, I'll be back for Christmas into February.

We need your help! In order to finish the mastering, design, and distribution process for Both Sides of Joni, we are running a Kickstarter campaign until October 2. You can help by pre-ordering your signed copy, or taking advantage of lessons, concerts, personal compositions, even getting a sweater knitted - have a look here and just sharing the link with your network is already incredibly helpful. The Kickstarter page has several cool preview videos, have a look. We are also booking the US release tour from April 5-26 and the Europe release tour June 12-July 10. Booking inquiries here.

Throughout September, there are some very special concerts around Indiana - this Saturday, September 3 a Musicians Union sponsored evening of jazz on Renwick Plaza in Bloomington, Friday, September 9, the Joni Mitchell project in IU's Dunn Meadow, Thursday, September 15, the Joni Mitchell project in Indianapolis at the Taggart Memorial Theater, and an Acoustic Project show at the Chatterbox on September 17 - see complete calendar below and stop by to wish me luck for the grand adventures in the year ahead.

Happy Labor Day Weekend!

Research Callout:

I'm working on a research project on the Jazz Road Grant for a chapter contribution to an upcoming Oxford Companion on Jazz and Politics. If you have applied for this grant or know someone who has, please take and share this survey. Results will help map the impact of the grant and advocate for stronger support structures.
