SEPTEMBER NEWS
September / 3 / 2019
Dear Forest Hills Family and Friends,

Forest Hills is buzzing with activity as we prepare for so many exciting events coming up. With the Annual Golf Tournament just around the corner (this Monday, September 9th), we're looking forward to seeing you on the links! Of course, if you're unable to make it to the Tournament or Awards Luncheon, we still appreciate your support during our only major fundraiser of the year. Read through this newsletter to learn more about how you can support our mission through this event.

This month, I want to share a very important message with you. Increasing challenges in the field of long-term care are resulting in many changes across the country. We are seeing some of these changes in our own Forest Hills community, and several staff have retired or resigned their positions as a result. Reasons for the staff changes we are experiencing are both personal and professional. Some staff are no longer are able to devote as much time to our community as they have been in the past due to conflicting health and/or family needs. Others have reached a point in their careers where they can afford a professional experience that is less complex, less demanding, less stressful, and requires less accountability.

I want to personally assure you, however, that Forest Hills remains unswerving in our commitment to provide you with quality care and services without regard to recent staff transitions. We have been very successful in recruiting talented and compassionate personnel who will continue to serve the needs of our residents and families.

I invite you to keep your eye out for ongoing program and operational innovative approaches to enhancing the quality of your lives at Forest Hills. You're starting to see some of them already! Remember, service to our community is the most important part of our day.

As always, I am available to talk with you about our community and welcome you to drop by anytime.

Hope to see you around,

Whole Grains: The World Tour
Better for People & the Planet

Whole grains have been tied to improved health in many studies and current recommendations suggest that we choose whole grains for at least half of the grains we eat. Whole grains are a part of the Mediterranean Diet, DASH diet and other healthy eating patterns across the world. Whole grains were also identified as part of a Planetary Health Diet in the recent EAT Lancet report.

The Kennedy Center & Forest Hills
Community Art-Making Project

We are proud to announce that The Kennedy Center and Forest Hills of DC will collaborate on a community art-making project for the new REACH expansion of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. On  Wednesday, September 11, 2019 in the Assembly Hall of Forest Hills, our seniors, their family members, and our staff are invited to participate in this creative community art project!

REACH is the first major expansion in Kennedy Center history and will provide visitors with an opportunity to fully interact and engage with the Center, transforming the traditional arts center into a living theater where the artist can be set free. "We have begun the work of creating a new approach to nourishing the creativity of our residents and staff in concert with the broader community. We cannot imagine a better way to launch our vision than this exciting project," says Mary Savoy, Executive Director at Forest Hills of DC.

Artists and brothers, Steven and William Ladd started this work, Scrollathon, in 2006. Nearly 1,000 participants will create thousands of tightly rolled textile "scrolls" that will be brought together to create the finished work. The work will be permanently mounted in the new REACH facilities where visitors - including participants and their families - can view the collaboration representing the DC Community.

On September 11, there will be two art-making sessions, 10:00am and 11:00am, in the Assembly Hall at Forest Hills of DC. We have 30 seats remaining for participants who want to join in the fun at the 11:00am session. There is no cost and no previous art experience required for this historic community engagement event, but space must be reserved.

Please reserve your seat by contacting Marianna Blagburn at (202) 696-1910 or [email protected] .
Upcoming Special Events
Forest Hills in and around the community

As we mentioned in last month's newsletter, our new therapy providers are sponsoring a Balance Clinic for all residents. Select Rehab will conduct screenings to identify balance problems and make recommendations to help prevent falls as the winter months approach. All residents of Forest Hills and Forest Side are invited to this free clinic, to be held in the Forest Hills gym on Wednesday, September 18th from 10:00-11:30am and 1:00-2:30pm.

We're not stopping there with our dedication to the health of our community! On Saturday, October 5th, Forest Hills will host a Community Health Fair to administer flu shots, blood pressure checks, and sponsor a Balance Clinic all for local community residents. Stay tuned for more details on this Fair coming soon.
