Supporting Families in Northern Hamilton County
Last month, the Northside Neighborhood House Leadership Team had the opportunity to attend the United Way of Greater Chattanooga's United for Working Families event. Throughout the presentation, information was shared about ALICE households that exist in Hamilton County. ALICE stands for asset limited, income constrained, and employed. These are neighbors we are helping daily, who are earning above the poverty level, but still living paycheck to paycheck. With an annual household income of $59,472*, one missed day of work, an unexpected illness, or even a broken-down car places these households in a position to make tough choices in order to care for their families.
At the NNH, we are committed to walking alongside all families. Whether it is through our CommUNITY School programming or the one-on-one case management taking place daily, we are standing in the gap with families during their most difficult times. We also feel a strong commitment to providing educational opportunities, like the one pictured above, that can solidify a family's ability to be more stable.
Thank you for joining us on this journey as we focus on empowering our neighbors across Northern Hamilton County.
Warm Regards,
Rachel Gammon, CEO
*ALICE household income is based on a family of 2 adults and 2 children

Vintage Miniature Singer Sewhandy Hand Crank Sewing Machine
Description: Made in Britain circa 1960, the Singer Sewhandy Machine was marketed as a practical child's toy and practice machine. Its miniature size also makes it convenient for any person -- adult or child -- to carry with them and use
on-the-go. The hand crank is functional, but as the machine is vintage it may need a little love before it's ready for everyday use.

One of our case managers connected with a neighbor who has just moved back to the Chattanooga area and is living with her parents, who are on a fixed income. Having fled a dangerous situation, she is going through the legal process while taking care of her son. This neighbor’s main concern was finding clothes and shoes for her son, but she was also in need of scrubs, shoes, and other clothing for the new job she had just been offered. Our case manager was able to provide a voucher for them to spend on clothing and refer them to partner agencies and programs to assist our neighbors in this time of transition.

As the Northside Neighborhood House marches towards its 100th year, we thought it would be fun to share some of our moments in history.
In the 1980s, the Northside Neighborhood House continued to expand its programming. We partnered with other community organizations to offer such opportunities as teen cooking classes, academic tutoring, senior citizen outings, and crafting classes. During the early eighties, Marty Landis served as Executive Director and launched the vision for a new Northside Neighborhood House facility. This vision was brought to life in 1989, under the leadership of Executive Director Ansel Peak, when the new NNH office on Minor Street was constructed and opened.
If you have been involved with the NNH as a volunteer, a donor, or someone who has participated in our programming, we want to invite you to share your experience. As we move toward our 100th Celebration, we dream of sharing more stories of impact with you and our neighbors.
